djohn Posted July 12, 2004 Report Share Posted July 12, 2004 As some of you will know my son is a paratrooper. 6 weeks back we received a call from him, he was doing a jump 30 miles from us. full battalion [600] from 6 C130's. They were jumping in full kit [120 lbs] no reserve chute as they were coming out at 400 foot. Wouldn't have time for reserve to open.We went down to watch by special invitation over military training grounds. It was a magnificent site to see our elite forces dropping from the sky en-mass and made us feel very proud. After the drop, I was chatting with my son and asked him if it was just a normal training drop or anything special. [They do at least 4 per year to keep their wings].No, Dad it was to see if we still deserved the extra danger pay of £42.00 per week over and above other regiments!There were four top civil servants on the second plane watching these brave young men, some only eighteen years of age and just back from Iraq, throw up all over the plane as it bounced around the sky waiting for the green light. Each one of them stood up for over 20 minutes with all that weight on their back/front plus personal weapons, the noise of the plane and intense heat mixed with body odour. Each one trusting that the chute would open, no twisted lines or collapsed canopies.It was a good jump, only 12 were injured ranging from a twisted ankle to a broken arm. Two of the civil bods were women, one of the women was throwing up, one of the men wet himself when the rear doors opened just prior to the drop. My son remembers the look on their faces and the smell of fear as he passed by them.The civil servants originally were to watch from the ground but fortunately someone quite high up in the Airborne service insisted they took the ride in the sky. He has 7 medals 5 are campaign medals 2 are for something a little extra. He has now been in the Reg. for almost 9 years. The above awards have all been given in the past 3 years as our government have sent them off to every trouble spot you can think of.And they want to know if they still deserve the extra pay!! How have they justified all these people in the past? Not only that, how have they allowed every thing to get into the state it is in, to warrent the sort of extra expenditure Prudence predicts? In addition where has all the money gone that has been taken out of the publics pocket to fund the "necessary improvements in health, transport, blah, blah blah"? andsome Posted July 13, 2004 Report Share Posted July 13, 2004 I appreciate what Nellie is saying, but the point is that most if not all of the jobs that are to go, have been created since Labour came to power. How many of these extra jobs were necessary in the first place? I don't know about the civil service, the NHS is just as bad. Where Matron and the senior surgeons used to run a hospital, we now have a team of so called managers, many of whom are supplied with a car. No wonder we have super bugs taking over the hospitals. I feel sorry in one respect for people in these sort of jobs, but they have to realise that the public purse is not bottomless. Of course we need some civil servants, but how the hell can we need so many, now that we have modern methods of doing much of the work. Natural wastage but when they left the staff just weren't replaced. I don't know where these extra jobs went, but they didn't come to us.
