madboy33
Hi allMy new ATA drive is making a noise sometimes, like a needle scratching a record. Is this normal?
-pops-
Check if the noise comes when the drive is reading/writing - when its light comes on. Some sound is normal when it is doing something. My granddaughter said once the sound was like a mouse scratching in a corner.
moon
Normal or not I'd be a bit miffed with a noisy drive.
madboy33
Ok so to summarise it is normal for a drive to make a noiseIt is only when read/writing and no other timeThis is bad isnt it as over the years, this is the only drive that has made a noise New technology....................... :D :D :D
-pops-
Is it because you're being over-sensitive in consideration of the other problems you've had recently?Being a mechanical device, it will not be totally silent. It could be because you are listening to it and subconsiously expecting something to be wrong.Have a listen to old drives or someone else's and see how yours compares. If it is excessively noisy, take it back and complain.
madboy33
no its not excessively noisy just chatters as my little boy says
moon
It might be a characteristic of the brand. I've always had Seagates so I've got nothing to compare with. The only time I'm aware of them at all is when I run Windows Disc ScanDisc on my slave drive . It sound like a robot chundering. :D

Scarecrow Man
The only noise you should really be worried about is when nothing loads, and you hear a timed 'tick...tick...tick' Almost sounds like the drive is resetting, and it is. That's the sound of a bad drive.

mark2
Hi Madboy, I had a Maxtor 60gb made that sort of noise from day one, but never had any problems with it, now 3yrs old.I did find that for P4 based mobo's the Intel Application Accelerator from intel worked well in quietening it down
Scarecrow Man
Why don't you take the drive apart and see what's causing the noise?Just kidding. Is it still under warrenty? If so, take it back.
