andsome Posted November 5, 2004 Report Share Posted November 5, 2004 The voters in the North East of England have rejected John Prescott's idea of creating a regional assembly there. This is a massive blow to him, and one that I welcome whole heartedly. This would create yet another tier of government with more useless jobs for the boys and girls. In my area we already have Staffordshire County Council, Lichfield District Council, Burntwood Town Council and Hammerwich Parish Council. What makes Prescott think that a West Midlands regional assembly would be of any benefit at all? As far as I am concerned I hope that this vote will squash this stupid idea on the head once and for all, and save us all some money.More here. If yes they would then concoct a bill to present to Parliament to determine the powers the assembly would have. In other words they would decide, after the event, what it could and could not do. ranger Posted November 6, 2004 Report Share Posted November 6, 2004 Yes, if I remember right they dubbed this the Lothian question, I have to agree that matters that affect only England maybe it should only be English constituent MP'S that can vote on them, at the same time though there have been plenty of decisions taken in parliament that were imposed on Scotland that the Scottish people and Scottish MP's did not want but because of the majority of English MP's they were passed.and also remember these assemblies have only limited power.But I do agree that Welsh and Scottish MP's should not be voting on items that affect England only.
