Linux Internet Help!!

Seemed like a good idea at the time, but after 13 hours of banging my head against a wall I need someone to gimmie a hand! I've installed Linux Mandrake with no other problems, it all starts fine and looks good, however for some reason I can't connect to the internet!

I've tried hundreds of times, by going through Mandrake control centre and trying to configure the settings but with no luck!

I have two different broadband modems that I've tried: Speedtouch 330 and a Dynamode A360, both with no luck!

So if anyone want to be a god send and talk me through it step by step, before I uninstall it AGAIN, then I would be very grateful!!

Thanks

Damo

For the speedtouch, the easiest driver to install on linux (I'm using fedora Core 2) was this one It sets everything up for you. This will walk you through the setup. The only problem I had with it was I had to manually configure the dns ip's, I can't think of the file name atm, but it tells you when you run that script if it hasn't automaticly been configured. The format to put them in is:

Nameserver 1st ip here

Nameserver 2nd ip here

if you don't already have the microcode, this one should work, you just place it in the file that you just unpacked (speedtouchconf). I'll reboot into linux later if your still having problems so I don't have to do everything from memory :)

Hmmm I was on 9.2 with my Speedtouch modem [not the 330 model] does madrake even recognise it is a speedtouch modem?

Not as far as I can see. it's not just that one though, its the A360, which is what Im using now on windows, that wont work aswell! This is why I uninstalled Linux lastime!!

You might try:

updating the distro (10.1 is out now)

installing the drivers previously reccomended

using something with ETHERNET connectivity

From Damos PM'ing i thought he had ethernet :P

Take a look at this http://forum.pcanswers.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=26416

the mgmt.o file took me ages to find it, until i was sent it from someone at pca [err pc advisor and not answers :lol just to confuse things there]

The only difference as i've said above is that i was on 9.2 and it did recognise the speedtouch modem. It also told you what to get and where to put it. So speedtouch on Mandrake can work...with the right distro :(

GOD ONLY KNOWS!!!

This is why I gave up on linux last time!!!....I'm determined to get it running though, there must be someone coding drivers for usb support out there ......somewhere!!!! You fancy doing it P?? :D

Have you tried any of the Live CD Distros ?

If they work the installed ones will  :)

I was thinking of trying the Suse Live cd and see if that helps, because none of the full install cds seem to help.

I think i'll download one when I get home tonight, but to be honest Im not holding out much hope.

Looks like i'm gonna have to stick with XP!!! :(

Have you tried installing that speedtouchconf driver? What error do you get?

Hi, Sorry for the delay, I've downloaded the driver and microcode from those sites, but am unsure on the next step, does linux have inbuilt extraction software? or is it done through the console as root user?

Cheers

Right, this should work.

Open up terminal and type:

su root and type in your password when asked (if you are logged in as the root user, ignore this)

now then, cd to the file that you have downloaded the tar too, to do this type:

cd /folder/location/ (obviously, change the folder name(s) to the real one(s))

once you are there, you will get an error if that failed, if you didn't it's fine, type:

tar xzvf speedtouchconf-10-Nov-2004.tar.gz

if that has succseded, you will see a list of the files unpacked, if not, it will show you an error.

You then place your microcode inside the folder that has just been created.

cd into that new folder:

cd /speedtouchconf-10-Nov-2004/ (that file name may be different in the latest relese)

then type:

./speedtouchconf.sh

It should tell you what to do from there on, just for your info, the UK VCI is 0 38

when you come near the end of that, it will try and ping google.com, both times I installed that driver, the pinging failed, i think it's just a fedora problem, but if it happens to you, all you need to is wait for the script to finish (there are still a few things need doing), then what you need to do is go to /etc/ppp/ and find resolv.conf

You might find that this file has root access only, to fix that, cd to /ect/ and type:

chown *USERNAME* resolv.conf

That should fix it if not, try:

chown *USERNAME* resolv.conf -R

if that fixes it, open up the file, it should be empty, you need to put in this:

nameserver *DNS IP*

nameserver *DNS IP*

You should be able to find your isp's DNS ip's in it's documentation or on any isp-specific help group, you could try your isp's forum on adslguide if it has one, if you can't find it anywhere, i'm sure pipex wont mind you using their's untill you have found your own, mine are:

nameserver 62.241.162.200

nameserver 62.241.160.200

But you should only use those temporarily for obvious reasons....

After you have done that, reboot, and when you start up (botting up should take longer because it connects on startup), you should be connected to the internet.
