Believe it or not the games that came with windows (minesweeper/Solitare etc) weren't just there for fun. They were put in to teach people how to use a mouse. Since Win 3.1 was the first time most people would have seen a GUI they needed something to help grasp the concept of dragging and dropping, single click, double click & right click etc.

Second option would be to get her down to your local college and find out what FREE *yes free* training they have on offer. I know a couple of OAPs who have made good use of such courses to get to grips with IT and have even got something to prove they know how to do it.

Final step is the ECDL which is a must have for many companies employing admin/clerical staff and higher.

Concur with those statements Sir Rad. I have many acquaintances - all of a certain age - that have had great satisfaction at the local colleges and local community projects. Most of these friends have said they haven't gone on and completed the courses but picked and chose what they wanted as they progressed. They all have said how enjoyable they found the experiences.

If she speaks to the local FE College it is quite likely they will be able to provide some kind of online access to a course which would be suitable.

My experience is that teaching a member of your family to use a computer is a nightmare. Even more so for those of us who have picked things up as we went along. In the same way when someone asks you for directions you know how to get their yourself but are stumped on how to talk someone else though it - try telling someone how to copy/paste or any other "simple" task and you find it very hard to put into words (unless someone first did it for you!)

I was thinking about training other oldies at a local community centre.

I went the other day to enquire about it and they thought I was trying to enrol on a course rather than train others - they told me the courses were over-subscribed. I explained what I wanted to do and they then told I was too old (what????)

I then spoke to someone with a bit more intelligence. I have to be "approved" and I am now waiting.

I'm interested in that this "approval" is. Do they think I'm a geriatrophile, preying on old ladies?

(Geriatrophile is a word I (think I) made up but, may be not.)

My invented word is meant to convey the opposite end of the "philia" spectrum to paedophile.

I am not either of those things.

The correct word is gerontophile.

Main Entry: gerontophile

Part of Speech: noun

Definition: one who loves old people

Etymology: geronto- `elderly'

I should have known this, my mind is going in a geriatric fuzz
