What are some of the tweaks you have made to your OS (especially Win XP) and other programs that you have found benefitial and would recommend?

An example is turning off that annoying animated dog (search helper) by going to "start", "search", and clicking "turn off animated character".

Leave the little dog alone, I like him.

OK, here is another. Want to recapture some hard drive space?

Resize the Recycle Bin and System Restore: Right click on Recycle Bin, go to Properties and move the slider (preset at 10%) down to about 4 gb max.

For System Restore go My Computer, right click, select Properties, system restore tab, settings. Move the slider to about 1 gb. System Restore does not use more than that on 99% of systems.

Well, this is not necessarily a Windows Tweak persay, but I still think it is a majorly important tweak because it can drastically help your connection speed w/ dsl/cable. It is a little program called TCP Doctor, and it can be found Here. Make sure to follow the directions. I also suggest you use their online tweak tester to find out what number you should use, that can be found Here.

Also, I like to use the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and check all of the processes agasint the list found on This website. They reccomend what you should and should not leave running, and it can help with memory management (I was able to free up over 100 megs of memory). Be advised though, write down everything you do, and be sure to make Restore points in case you make a mistake. They also have a shareware program called The Ultimate Troubleshooter that integrates their task list with a program that helps you close/disable processes. It is a try and buy program.

Hope this helps.

EDIT----------

Oh, and another program I absolutely love is the ActiveSync Toggle by Micrologics. It can be found Here. What it does is allows you to turn off the Active Sync process (the one used to sync any Pocket PC handhelds you may use) and turn it on only when you need it. Obviously this is only of use to you if you use ActiveSync, but just in case you do I figured I would toss it in.
