ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I have just downloaded and installed the trial version of Diskeeper 9.0 Professional. I have done a few defrag runs, and I was impressed with the features and the speed it defragged. (I used boot defrag). However, when analyzing some of the volumes again, it seemed really not that much defragmented. It actually looked quite the same as after the regular Windows defrag. (With the exception that the folders were moved together). When I tried to run Windows defrag - just to run analyze from there - it brings up Diskeeper. I cannot start Windows defrag, even from C:\Windows\system32 ! That annoys me a bit...Anyway, my question is: anyone here uses/used Diskeeper? What is the impression of Diskeeper?I am just a bit unsure if it's worth the USD 30 USD 50 (actually, for the Professional edition)...? andsome
I have used the paid for full version of Diskeeper 8 for some time now. I have been extremely happy with it. I particularly like the set it and forget it feature, and the boot time defrag, it really speeds things up. I was offered, and indeed accepted the chance to test Diskeeper 9 some months ago. I uninstalled it after a week, and reverted back to Diskeeper 8. Since the MS defrag is based on Diskeeper, you will NOT be able to run MS defrag with Diskeeper installed. Diskeeper will automatically open. If you have any chance at all of obtaining a full copy of Diskeeper 8, I can highly recommend it.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Thanks for the reply -- I knew the first would come from you...Could you just a little bit elaborate why you didn't go for version 9, but reverted back to v8 ? -pops-
Exactly as andsome. The reason I didn't go for the 9 version is that I didn't think it offered much over the version 8 that justified the additional expenditure.

I also found it a little bit more difficult to understand. Version 8 serves me very well indeed. No red bits showing here, and neither disc ever show more that 1% defrag, because the program runs silently in the background.

Usually I am all for new releases, but sometimes a new version just sucks! (That happened with IE 5.5, or Acrobat Reader 6.0; both times the previous version was far better, but both were eventually replaced by newer, better versions - IE 6.0 and AR 7.0).Anyway, one more question. I seem to be unable to find the difference between Diskeeper Home Edition (USD 19.95) and Diskeeper Professional Edition (USD 49.50). Any info or link? scuzzman
This is just speculation, but I'm betting you get improved support and possibly a site license with the Pro. Also, a lot of time people charge more for pro (business)versions because, at least in the US, one can write them off on their taxes. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Ok, I have now purchased and installed the Professional version. I have not tested "Set It and Forget It"; I have just run manual defrags and boot-time defrags. Now I want to set a schedule to defrag some of my partitions every night, but I can't figure out how. The available options areSet Smart Schedule - this option will enable defragmentation of the selected volume(s) any time defragmentation is needed, day or night.Set Smart Schedule after hours - this option will enable Smart Scheduling "after hours". This will cause Diskeeper to run when defragmentation is needed, but only between the hours of 10pm and 4am.Set to run every night - this option will enable scheduling to run every night. Diskeeper will run every 2 hours each night, between 10pm and 4am.Set to run on weekends only - this option will enable scheduling to run on weekends only. Diskeeper will run every 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday.Set Screen Saver Mode - this option will enable Screen Saver mode. Diskeeper will run any time the screen saver is active. When the screen saver stops, defragmentation will stop running.Set a custom schedule - this allows me to set a one-time schedule, continuous run, every 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, or 72 hours, or "Smart Scheduling". Additionally I can select every day, or exception days. This is perfectly not what I want! I want it to run once every night, at random times between 22:00 and 04:00. Is that possible? How? ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Ok, I played a bit around and found that in Custom Schedule, if I select Every Day, I get more options, and can set the start time frame. All set now...
deuces wild
I used to use it. I don't think it does as good of job defragging as O&O defrag or VoptXP.If the time it takes to defrag is any indication on the thouroughness of the defrag, and I defrag often, diskeeper is finished in less than a minute, sometimes within seconds, while O&O and VoptXP take well over 10 minutes, sometimes approaching 20. deuces wild
Could be. Any expert opinions on this?
Boris
I've tried them all and settled with Raxco PerfectDisk 7Raxco evaluation version Click Here
deuces wild
On what did you base your decision Boris?
Boris
I ran O&O, Diskeeper + Perfect Disk - each for 4 weeks at a time about 15 months ago. On my usage patterns, Perfect Disk seemed to keep the drives far less fragmented + not needing any further defrags longer than the other two apps. Its Smart Placement and Offline defragment facilities were also useful. But - whatever I say, in the end - its all a matter of personal taste ! andsome
But - whatever I say, in the end - its all a matter of personal taste !Very true. I tried this and it fouled up on me and I had to uninstall. No two computers behave the same.
