I think the "all in one" approach isn't as good as having a small number of products from companies that specialize in their software. I think Norton Internet Security is pretty huge as far as size on the hard disk and resource needs when it's running. I know AVG and Zone Alarm work well and don't seem to tax the system as much. Plus they're free!I look at it like buying a fax, copier, scanner, or different devices for each. A fax, copier, scanner is good in some situations, but if you want a very good copier that runs fast and works well, you'll probably buy a dedicated copier.I have no hard and fast evidence here, just my opinion. scuzzman Posted March 30, 2005 Report Share Posted March 30, 2005 1) I agree with homecomputeraid on the "specialised products for specialised purposes" take.2) I actually prefer ZoneAlarm to any other personal firewall available - but noting hurts with trying a few, just be sure to completely uninstall one before installing another. A few good utilities to test them are GRC.com's ShieldsUP! test, and GRC's Leaktest utility.3) My favored antivirus solution would be Grisoft's AVG. Kaspersky is (generally, by the people I know in the business) regarded as having the best detection rate going. But just recently I have started to have a preference for Sygate Personal Firewall. It just put them in the virus vault. The 'heal' option is not available and I'm not sure whether to completely remove them. As I have tried several times to receive the e-mails, zonealarm has realised it may be something I actually wanted to happen.
