All the basic controls are there, e-mail scanner, virus vault, etc.The firewall disables Windows Firewall during install, strange yes, but apparently necessary.I found the program ran quite well, and the firewall was doing it's job. Firefox was already pre-configured to be allowed and did not require any configuration. The firewall setup is a bit advanced, as it is asking you whether to allow or disallow "Windows RPC service, Windows DHCP Protocol Client, DNS Protocol Client, ICMP Diagnostics" and more. I suggest default options here.It will scan your hard drive for programs, and lets you set them up as allow or disallow. Again, defaults for things you are unsure of.After the install, if you launch a program (MSN Messenger used in screen shots) the Firewall will pop-up, telling you that something is accessing the internet (like Windows Firewall) and asks you what you would like to do. (Allow, Deny, Show Details)Overall, I like the new program, but it doesnt seem to be any more advanced than Windows Firewall. Therefore I have decided to go back to Sygate Personal Firewall, which is nicely complimented by AVG Free Edition.When I updated to SP2 I decided to give Windows Firewall a trial to see if it worked as well as was quoted at the time. I completely removed Zonealarm prior to installing SP2. I'm a little worried at your remark, that it seems no more advanced than SP2's Firewall though. In all this time that I've been using it, I've never been alerted to any probing of my PC or asked for permission to allow any application to access the internet!I've checked all my settings and they are correct, the Firewall is fully functional. Should it ask me if I want to allow access to the internet or not? I am aware that there are two schools of thought on whether SP2's Firewall is 2 way or just stops incoming traffic.I think I may give this new Firewall a trial run as I do like and trust the antivirus application of AVG. I just assume that because AVG requires you to turn off Windows Firewall, the two are similar, or cannot be run at the same time, because AVG is run as a service instead of an executable file.Chances are you have nothing bad trying to attack your computer. That is why you are not seeing flashing lights all the time. The main reason I use firewalls on windows machines are viruses like sasser and blaster, which will cripple your machine as soon as it is connected to the internet without a firewall. You can place a check in the box to remember the application, so you will not be asked again. But, I only recomend this for programs you know you want to always be on the internet.You can go into AVG, open the Firewall properties, and see the log of blocked traffic. This will give you an idea of why a firewall is important.For example, Date and time: Â 2005-04-23 23:11:44 Action: Â Â Â Â Â Block Application: Â Â Filter Device Protocol: Â Â Â Â TCP Direction: Â Â Â In Local address: Â 206.172.136.175:135 Remote address: Â 206.172.75.81:4439I have quite a few of these, and have only had the program installed a few hours. Thank you :DYou are quite welcome.For my final word. AVG makes a great anti-virus solution. I expected the same from the firewall, and have so far not been let down. Although this was a short test. I am sure this is a configuration error, but Firefox has already been permitted to use internet.
