Making basic building plan sketches...

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a simple drawing prog that will create lines of specified lengths to form the outline of two dimensional multisided objects. Eg. to draw a rectangle of dims 6 x 3. Ideally, the prog would be scaleable and would auto rescale if a drawing was becoming bigger than the screen. It would be even better if it was free! Thanks in anticipation.

scuzzman and rong. Have now tried two progs, qcad and cadstd. Both of these will do the job but I'm trying to save further time in the drawing process. Ideally, I would be able to start from any point on a 'graph', creating a building outline as a series of straight lines (by, for example, chosing to create a line by inputting length and direction, with the starting point of any particular line being the finishing point of the previous one), with the developing outline auto centreing and rescaling as the 'structure' develops. Tbh, I don't mind paying for such an application if it indeed exists. And even better if the prog displays the inputted dims automatically! Thanks in anticipation. :)

You'll  be looking for what sounds like a Vector graphics tool. Check out Visio (Microsoft) or AutoCAD... Might be promising.

Thanks for that. I'm looking into ACAD first...I've emailed their help desk to ask them if it does what I need. Will post back with the results.

I have a jolly useful thing called FloorPlan. It started out as a DOS prog., and was then revamped as FloorPlan for Windows (in the days of 3.1). I think it is in 16 bit and providing you configure it properly it works through an MSDOS pif. For just quick little drawings it is super, but lacks the bells and whistles of a full blown CAD package.

That having been said, I do not know if it is still available.....that's not very helpful..is it? But someone just might have a copy!!!

Nice lead catgate, thanks. Guys on this site have kindly given me links to dozens of cad applications and I seem to recall seeing Floorplan somewhere. I'll have a mooch and see if it is still around. Failing that, if anyone out there still has this?......Cheers! db.
