'Pay-as-you-go' road charge plan

It would also mean every vehicle would have a black box to allow a satellite system to track their journey.

Fantastic... I always wanted someone to watch where I drive!

It'll probably be sunk by technical problems... can you imagine these things not breaking down? What happens then?

Don't we already pay-as-we-go?

Just consider the iniquitous taxes levied on all transport both private and public.

No black box needed (think about the huge compulsory expense of installing that - shades of ID card charges there). The tax on fuel already dictates how far we go. The thing missing is the Big Brother approach of the authorities not knowing where we go.

How long before half the population of the country is spying on the other half - who, in turn, are spying on the other half who, in turn, are spying on the other half. Infinity calls and the extreme repressive regimes of Eastern Europe of a few years ago are being resurrected :(

Having been stuck for more than an hour on the M25 in total gridlock when returning from France last Thursday - I have sympathy with any scheme that will reduce the number of vehicles on the road. The government will need to do something and whatever it is will. it be highly unpopular with some section(s) of society.

They are damned if they do - and damned if they don't.

We could start by banning all drivers under 25 years old and over 75. Then ban all females, left handed people and drivers of 4x4's. If this doesn't do the job - next ban sprinter vans, Honda cars, people under 5 foot 6, Tory's and Liberal Democrats.

- - - and anyone who owns more than one car. (2 Jags, for instance)

In regard to the M25, that well known cark park was inadequate even before it was built.

I should point out at this juncture that I don't drive any longer so any comments I may make are something of an outsider's stance.

get rid of road tax and insurance....... the state picks up the tab

double/triple ? the the fuel tax ...... you need fuel ..your insured to drive in the UK provided you have a driving licence and an MOT compliant vehicle .....

Another opportunity to use the police for fund raising ..... all police cars fitted with emission detectors linked to digital on-board cameras .... All they have to do is their normal job of driving around ..

All town /security/motorway/bus cams linked to the same system .... government fine windfall ...

Theres a van in Hackney ..that just parks up in the morning , near Ridley market with about a dozen officers on foot , a couple of bikes and police cars on the escape routes ... The vans got a number recognition camera liked to the national crime base ...Any plate that links up to anything outstanding ..they pull the car ....They cannot do it often as it leads to weeks of paperwork ......

Were not far off .. the congestion charge is the first trail
