dehydratedchicken Posted June 8, 2005 Report Share Posted June 8, 2005 Hi, I have just been looking on the internet for God, The Devil and Bob on DVD when I came across a website where I could download TV Shows from LINK REMOVEDThey have plenty of stuff including Friends but I'm sure I wouldnt be able to downlaod it all due to my slow 300KB broadbandI know that downloading films and music is illegal and I dont do that anyway (such a loyal fan to The Alkaline Trio :) ) but want to know if the laws are the same for TV shows before I start downloading - heard about the kids who got charged upto £4000 just for musicI've tried googling it but most of the results seem to show arguements to why file sharing should be allowedThanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

deuces wild Posted June 8, 2005 Report Share Posted June 8, 2005 It is legal in the US to copy tv shows from your tv to tape or disk.LINK on the US Supreme Court decision on Sony v Universal.LINK to the actual case.However, I am not certain that downloading a tv show from an internet falls under the Supreme Courts decision. They are too complex and have not caught up with the fact that we are now in an age of global trade and communication. The regulations vary from country to country and, in some cases, completely contrary between them - such as is illustrated by Deuces Wild's post here - that same legality over there may be illegal over here (UK).My son contacted the BBC about recording programmes from their output. They answered that they are quite happy for people to record BBC programmes for their own private use. This has been aided and encouraged recently on the BBC website by the provision of the "Listen Again" facility where BBC programmes can be heard again for periods of seven days following the original broadcast. There is, of course, in addition, BBC7 where classic BBC output can be heard multiple times. The same applies to BBC television. There is no problem in recording BBC TV programmes for your own use.Throughout the above, I have been careful in my use of "BBC programmes" and "BBC output". This is very deliberate. The BBC cannot and do not permit the recording of commercial records, sound or video recordings or films played on the BBC networks where the copyright is held by other than the BBC. They know it happens, yes, but there isn't much they can do about it until someone comes up with an effective copyright protection system that works via the RF broadcast system.Regarding the download of commercial material via the Internet - other than direct from, and with the permission of, the copyright owner (the BBC in the example above) - that remains, rightly, illegal. Where this is done on a mass basis or for profit, the copyright owners can and do pursue offenders i.e. the ones who offer the facilities to enable this.If you do make illegal downloads the chances of getting caught are low but, there are a number of examples where downloaders have been caught and given exemplary punishments.
