Tankus Posted June 19, 2005 Author Report Share Posted June 19, 2005 Michelin didn't know they had a problem until the accident investigation results from the pre qualifying accident .....But there is a bit more than that .......most of the teams involved ..have also been involved with the German breakaway F1 to get away from Ecclestones tentacles .Plus there is also the single manufacturer tire sourceing debate Is it just the tires...? Only Ferrari, Minardi and Jordan - on Bridgestone tyres - raced after Ferrari scuppered a last-ditch rescue proposal. The Italian team vetoed a plan agreed by all the other teams to introduce a chicane at the final corner, which had caused problems for Michelin tyres. The FIA refused to allow the change - and as a result the seven Michelin teams pulled out after the parade lap. The crowd at Indianapolis were largely oblivious to the controversy - until Renault, McLaren, BAR, Williams, Red Bull, Toyota and Sauber all dived into the pit lane moments before the start. Â To change the course to help some of the teams would be grossly unfair to those teams which have come to Indianapolis with the correct tyres FIA statement Michelin had advised its seven teams not to race without changes because of the tyre failure that lead Ralf Schumacher to smash into a wall in Friday practice. And team officials, F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone, and - at one point - all 20 drivers were locked in lengthy talks in a bid to save the race. The teams emerged to say nine of them had agreed to race with a chicane at Schumacher's accident spot.But Ferrari objected and F1 officials had already ruled out making a change to the track. "To change the course in order to help some of the teams with a performance problem caused by their failure to bring suitable equipment to the race would be a breach of the rules and grossly unfair to those teams which have come to Indianapolis with the correct tyres," the FIA said. Team officials seemed to hang on the hope that track bosses would make the changes anyway. And all 20 drivers took to the track for the parade lap on the proviso they would only pass the start if they got word the chicane was installed. But the start came and went without news of the change, and the teams immediately pulled out. The crisis began on Friday after Toyota drivers Schumacher and Ricardo Zonta crashed at the same spot on the final bend. Despite tests, Michelin were unable to "understand or reproduce" the tyre failure that caused the crash. The company wanted to fly in new tyres from its factory in France, but International Automobile Federation (FIA) rules introduced this season, prohibit the introduction of a new tyre part-way through a Grand Prix weekend. I see that as bloody right!!!! There was a problem, they admitted they brought the wrong tyre......there fault. You can blame them but you can praise them for being safe...I see no problem with that....All that was needed a shicane [spelling] to slow the cars down...the FIA did not want that and so 6 cars started....Did you see the Amercian fans being interviewed? joysness Posted June 19, 2005 Report Share Posted June 19, 2005 Here in the US F1 used to be quite popular but NASCAR has taken over I think.There are still lots of F1 fans but they cover the NASCAR more on tv.Interesting thread as I am watching the NASCAR race right now and they are having tire problems also. I think they use Good Year exclusively in NASCAR.It seems there have been a lot of tire problems this whole season on NASCAR.Don't know if it has anything to do with all the safety changes they have been making over the past couple of years. andsome Posted June 20, 2005 Report Share Posted June 20, 2005 It was as has been said a complete farce. The FIA are slowly killing the whole thing off. A lot of the so called safety regulations are in fact causing more danger. The whole idea of making one set of tyres last for the whole race was supposed to make the drivers slow down and nurse the tyres. WHO is going to do that, the whole idea is to finish first, and in doing so, to provide a spectacle worth watching. Half the enjoyment was seeing the race to get the cars out of the pit stops in the shortest time, the whole thing was a team effort, the driver plus the pit stop crew. Yet another daft idea is to make an engine run for two races. Many more of these daft rules, and I for one will not be watching for much longer. Why all the fuss also about fuel. For heavens sake, let them put in what fuel the feel fit at what time they feel fit. About the only sensible new rule has been to limit the number of actual qualifying laps to one.
