deuces wild Posted November 27, 2005 Report Share Posted November 27, 2005 I have a Dell Dimensions 4600 with 4 memory slots, 2 are filled with 256 mb sticks. These are DDR SDRAM 333 mhz sticks. I would like to upgrade with another 512 mb. Can I buy one single 512 mb stick or do I need to buy 2 256 mb sticks? Though, I prefer to break RAM up into as many sticks as will fill my bays for one reason: If one stick should fail, I have the others to fall back on whereas with one stick I'm out of a computer till I replace it. If you dont notice a failure in the first year, chances are you are OK. I have had a P3 with 512MB of RAM, running for over 8 years now, not one stick has failed. deuces wild Posted December 2, 2005 Author Report Share Posted December 2, 2005 Well I picked up the 512mb stick, installed it and the computer crashed. I had to remove it and do a system restore from an image I created last Sunday. I called Dell (I guess I should have done that from the start) and found out I need to put two 256mb sticks in the 2 open slots. I have the stick I purchased up for sale on Ebay and bought two 256mb sticks on the net today from Tiger Direct for around $50. Lesson learned.
