Talking of sprouts, my local Tesco is selling picked, loose sprouts at £0.98/Kg that's about 100 of the little blighters. They are also selling sprouts "on the stalk" i.e. a plant pulled up from the ground, decapitated and sold otherwise entire. I counted the sprouts on one of them - 27. The cost? £2.99.

Rounding up/down the arithmetic, loose the sprouts are about one penny each. On the stem, ten pence each AND you have to pick them off yourself. Worst of all, they can sell the top of the plant separately as Brussels tops or "Spring Cabbage".

We always buy on the stalk from a local farm. They are complete with tops and work out cheaper, as well as keeping longer. I don't know this years price until I go tomorrow
