doug Posted January 17, 2006 Report Share Posted January 17, 2006 Early in Dec. I bit the bullet and started to redecorate one of our bedrooms - not been done for the last 15 years. Will be turning this room into 10 yr old G'daughter's bed room for when she stays and it can also be used for guests. G'daughter's present room, which is on the small side will then be redone for 18 month G'sons room - we have him for 24 hours each week. This is a sort of explanation for my seeming absenses. Reason I haven't done this room before is because there was a sort of problem in that the ceiling had to be lowered. This house had had planning permission as a four up/four done just before WWII but the restrictions came in. when it was built just after the war it was actually built as a 2 up/2 down.A number of families have lived hear and progressively "improved" it. First was a 3rd bedroom built as a flat roof add on, then this 4th bed room was built on and the roof re-pitched to make it continuous. This is where the problem came -jerry built? The windows fore and aft weren't set into near the centre of the walls front and back but were just tacked onto the external wall of the 3rd bedroom. Now the biggest problem was the ceiling. The builder just started the new ceiling from the top of the last bedroom. Consequently, it finished up 22cm higher than normal - it looked very tall, Being a colder room than the others I have installed a suspended ceiling with an additional 50 mm insulation (there is already a 100 insulation in the roof. I also had to lift part of the flooring to sort out a problem with the floor joists which bounced - found a major split. We then went on hold as we had missed our slot for the plasterer just before Christmas.This was a worry as we had friends coming to stay on Jan 12th. eventually I got plastered but too late for friends visit. Mike, who snores for England, had to sleep on G'daughter's bed. At least he was still one cavity wall away from the rest of us. Had planned to put him in the newly refurbished room. At least that would have given us 2 cavity walls as a buffer. Still we all slept well(lubricated). They left this morning after a wonderful 5 days.Back on schedule, today managed to trace and remove a rogue electric cable that protruded from the wall of the small bedroom - it had been installed as a shaver light point. I had it terminated with a junction box on the wall. Found that this wire disappeared into the cavity and connected into part of the upstairs lighting circuit but it was 20 feet away. This has now been totally removed. At times I have sworn at previous owners who have made improvements and modifications and left cables behind. I think I'm now tidy. The wiring is all "sound as a pound".So Carpet fitter arrives on Thurs to refit in the room just finished. Then I can shuffle furniture into that room. gut present small room and decorator will re-paint it on Monday - have chickened out of that. Next to sort everything out for the decorator to paint all the upstairs doors and skirting board on the landing. Six doors.Good job G'son sleeps in one of these mobile cots!So there we have it. Most nights have been to goosed to more than log in and just lurk with a sensation or 3 in my hand. Oh isn't it nice to do a serious posting again.Edit, will start jogging againg in the next few days.
