Fickle Router

I booted up this morning only to be greeted with the message that I couldn't connect to the Internet because of a problem.

Without going into details of what I did to investigate it, I eventually narrowed it down to not having a TPC/IP address - Why? I have no idea. It worked OK at shutdown last night.

I did a System Restore - same problem.

I did a re-install from backup (which I made yesterday, luckily) - same problem.

Only one thing then it must be the router.

After poking around in the junk box for a while, I managed to find the old frog modem which I fitted up and was back on line (albeit a bit slow as the frog isn't fast enough for my new super speed service).

I went out for a while this morning and when I got back I thought I'd give the router another try, not with any expectation that things would be any different.

I hadn't made any adjustments or alterations anywhere in the system, apart from plugging in the frog but, lo and behold, the router worked.

Moral of this: Don't expect anything in computing to be logical. Things have minds of their own and if they're in a mood, they show it!

Sorry you went through all that!

You might try an IPconfig /release and IPconfig /renew the next time it happens and see if your router gives you a new IP.

I had a similar problem when my linksys router was dying. It happened often enough that I bought a new router.

BT Voyager 2110

I installed one of these a month or so ago at my son's house. It went in like a dream so, I thought I'd have another one.

I have three machines currently. One is hard wired to the router and two wireless via an ASUS Wi-Fi card in my prime machine (which is not entirely satisfactory but it was free with the motherboard). With this new setup I will have all three wireless (I hope).

My new wireless setup is now up and running and so far is very good. All three computers are now wirelessly connected to the Internet rather than as it was before where one machine was hard wired and the wireless system went from that.

I have noticed straightaway that the (what used to be) satellite machines are much, much faster in their Internet connection and I'm very happy with it all :) :) :) :)

After things apparently running very smoothly, I had a call from my son saying that he couldn't access certain sites on the box I installed for him. I went and had a look and sure enough, some but certainly not all, secure sites (https) just hung when loading up. Several were medical sites but on checking others, eBay and even the BT Yahoo mailbox (which he doesn't normally use) were inaccessible. BUM! My other son had also had a look at it and came to the same conclusion - it wasn't working.

I went home after fitting his old (wired) system back up again and checked my own new wireless system - exactly the same. The really irritating thing is that not all https sites are affected. Yahoo mail is, eBay is but Amazon (sign-in customer section) isn't. There are other similar anomalies.

We emailed the helpline. The standard reply was received: phone them (why have an email helpline, I ask).

After lots of fiddling and faffing about upgrading firmware, adjusting ,that and the other, they had to admit there was a fault in both products. Apparently it was common in the previous version but the new one was supposed to overcome it. It was even suggested at one point that it couldn't cope with the new high speed ADSL.

Back to square one. A Netgear device is on its way.

Be warned - avoid BT Voyager 2110 Wireless ADSL Routers. They are not reliable.

Another update:

Following the fiasco with the BT Router, I bought and have installed Netgear DG834G wireless modem/routers both here and at my son's house.

I've had them going a few days now so, I thought now is the time to give a verdict.

They are working spot on but, not only that, working very fast. I've been getting download speeds this morning of 8124Kbps!!!!!!! I think that's because everyone else around here is still in bed but yesterday I was getting between 6 - 7 Kbps which is very good indeed.

I can go where I want without the router deciding that I shouldn't go there and I'm very pleased.

Not quite so easy to set up as the BT one but, not difficult at all so long as you realise that you can't install automatically if there's a router been there before.
