While he may have lost his department he keeps the trappings of office, including the car, the salary, and the two grace and favour homes. Which seems reasonable to me, I mean without the extra homes he'd have to take the new mistress home to meet the wife and if you forced him to earn an honest wage, god knows what he'd do next.
