I've just has an email from BT tonight advising that they are to regrade existing customers, at no extra cost, from 2 MB to 8MB service shortly. It must be to stay abreast of the competition. :D

But is it a practical possibility?

I would be quite happy to stay at 2MB as it's fast enough for me. If they want to upgrade my package then I am quite happy to go along with it. It will be right on the limit of my router. BT Voyager 205. :D

I think you will probably get one in the next couple of days. I have emailed a friend of mine in Washington to see if he has had one. I will let you know what he says when he replies. :)

It's a ploy to get you to buy another modem. :)

They tell us that USB modems supplied with the broadband start-up packages e.g. the "frog" are unable to take advantage of the higher speeds so BT recommend that you go with a new high speed USB modem or (which they prefer) wireless or Ethernet thus hoping you will be straight down to the BT online shop to buy it.

Considering the problem I had with the BT Voyager modem/router which I have just returned to them, be very careful in your choice.

Regarding the 8Mb service, which I have had for a few weeks now, you are only likely to notice any difference in performance when doing large downloads. For general email, forums and web surfing the the high speed is not noticeable. Even with downloads, some sites have a cap on their download speed (e.g. Nero) so there is no advantage at all in the 8Mb service over and above the 2Mb.

Just out of curiosity.... is there any upgrade to the 2mb usuage policy to reflect the speed change or does this stay the same, otherwise its like giving someone a Porshe and limiting them to 30mph roads! An extra couple of meg usage would not hurt and it would give users more elbow room.

Also I notice that from BT site that this will take BT Broadband Option 1 speed to 8mb - are other price plans going to be affected as I notice that BT Broadband Option 2 is running on 6MB, so in effect these customer will be overtaken by the upgrade. Although I dont have BT myself I do get people enquring what is best package out there for them.

There is no customer cost involvement in these upgrades.

I upgraded to 8Mb service when I found that it was first available. If it was going to cost, though, I would have thought very carefully before doing anything. As I said above, for the general emailler/surfer, there is little obvious speed increase with the faster service. It is only on large downloads that the fast speed becomes apparent.

On the capping aspect, even though I download quite a lot, I have never exceeded my 40GB/month allowance and even if I did, there is no penalty unless you do it on a regular basis.

I agree with what you have said pops about there no noticeable difference for the normal surfer. As I stated I would have been just as happy to stay with the 2MB service as this is quite fast enough for what I do on the Internet. According to a recent website I was on, 8MB is the top lmit for my BT Voyager and if it means having to buy a new Modem/Router then I may think three times about the regrade.

Dorian, I think all of the BT Options will be upgraded as I cant see Option 1 allowing 8MB when Option 2 only allows 6MB. I think there will be a regrade notification sent out to all people on the BT plans.

It looks like the model that was brought out before the Voyager 100. I can't see that you will miss anything by not upgrading though as it only refers to the download speed and not the upload.

Now activated. I received an email today to tell me the speed is now 8MB.

Noticed anything different?

Not really pops. I suppose the only noticeable difference will be with any big downloads, apart from that I don't think I will notice much change.

You must live quite close to the exchange to get that type of speed, also the maximum possible speed is 7.15 Mb due to 'overheads'.

Are you within the 10 day training period then?

When I was on it I used to get quite a few disconnections but my speed has now settled down and I'm on a 3 Mb profile now.

I can't get a faster speed as I live too far from the exchange on a line around 5.5 km in length :(

I am still waiting for my upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb on NTL cable, it will be done before the end of June. At present I usually get a bit more that 2Mb, usually about 2.1 or 2.2. We are first connection on the box, it is outside next doors house.
