Home page problem

I decided to format and reinstall Windows. No matter what I do now, everytime I click on Internet Explorer, it opens to MSN as the home page. I have opened Tools/Internet options and typed in www.google.co.uk, and clicked apply. As soon as I close that page the default switches back to MSN. Any suggestions please as to how to keep google as my home page?

Hmm, I have seen exactly the same problem somewhere today, but I can't remember where... or what the solution was.

Any security software perhaps preventing the change?

I have installed exactly as on previous occasions. When I set up my INTERNET connection I selected always on Broadband. The first time that I connected MS page opened up. No matter how many time I open INTERNET Options and type in Google as soon as I close the page, it reverts back to MS. I have now reinstall Spyware blaster and set the home page in Tools/Misc IE settings to Google and that still shows up in there, but MS opens up. I have now installed SUPERAntispyware and set that also to protect my home page setting, all to no avail.

It could be that by typing the address into the box, it is not the complete address required by IE to keep as the home page.

Try this:

Open IE and locate the page you want to keep as your home page. Open Tools -> Internet Options, Home Page -> Use Current. The box should then indicate the page you are on. Tick Apply and see what happens. (May need to tweek the home page protectors)

The problem is that the moment that I open the programs window the page has reset to MSN, even though I have altered it and clicked apply. Never had this happen with previous installation.

I just download the Google Toolbar, and tell it to reset my homepage.

Microsoft may be hiding it's hijack somewhere. You can post a hijackthis log to see if we can sniff it out. Homepages can be changed from many places.

I don't use it apart from windows updates, (I downloaded it by accident) but I thought I would try to change the home page to see what to do as I haven't used it as a browser for years and found I have the same problem as you.

I have now created a desktop shortcut straight to Google, which means that I can double click that and go straight on line to Google. I haven't yet found a way of tying this shortcut into the start menu in place of the Internet Explorer button.

Do you have Spybot S&D installed? If yes go to the immunise section and check that you don't have your home page locked.

Try searching for a file called "iereset.inf", you may have to undo the hidden file attribute in your folder options. If you have xp it should be in your C:\windows\inf folder. Open it up and change any line with this

to what you want, say http://www.google.co.uk. Save the changes, open ie, goto tools, internet options, programs tab, and reset your web settings. This should reset all your default registry settings to something you want. Smart hijackers can even change this file.

To change it in the startmenu. Right-click on the start button and goto explore. Find the ie shortcut and right click, properties. Then change the target line to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://www.google.co.uk". Hope some of this helps :D

Thanks very much, but I still can't get Google to stick. It looks as though I will just have to use my shortcut to Google to bypass MSN. i am still trying to pin it to Start up without success.

I think that's a good idea, andsome. Even if you don't keep the alternative, it will point you in the right direction as to where the problem lies.

I tried Firefox once before and didn't like it. As I said above I have just done a complete reinstall. From looking round on various forums, it would appear that there is a small registry corruption stopping me from changing my home page. This can be corrected by tinkering about, but I am not prepared to do that. I don't intend doing another reinstall as long as everything else is running like lightning. I just happen to like using Google. I have now managed to open up Google, and pin that page to the top of the start menu, and have removed the old Internet Explorer button from there. Now I can go straight to Google from START. I will now close this topic, unless anyone else wants to add to it, in which case please PM me.

Problem now completely resolved. TJay kindly sent me a couple of suggestions. As it worked out my settings were the same as his suggestion. He mentioned however a start in Safe mode.

I restarted in safe Mode. Unticked the home page locking box in SUPERANTISpyware and Spyware blaster. Then opened Internet Options and reset the home page to Google. While this window was still open, I made sure that in Spyware Blaster and SUPERAntispyware the home page was listed as Google, then reticked the locking boxes, and closed down Internet options. When I rebooted the home page stayed as Google. I have restarted a couple more times and everything is now OK. If anyone else gets the same problems, then following the above, all should be OK.
