andsome
Did you do a complete format and full install, or did you just run an install on top of the old XP?
-pops-
Does this happen with all programs or just specific ones? Can you access the event viewer when this happens to try and see what is happening there?
Hornblower
Hi andsome,I think I made a full repair. I started from the CD and then pressed [return] (installation) instead of [R] (repair installation). I had to reinstall all drives and documents after the installation.Hi pops,I have a Swedish version of windows CP but i think the event viewer is the window you reach when pressing [ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]?I can reach this window when the program freezes. The programs status is described as "not answering" (freely translated from Swedish).
andsome
If my memory serves me correctly, then your action may have installed XP on top of the old version. You should have formatted to remove the old version. There is a full guide to installing windows which you should print out and follow.CLICK HERE. Hornblower
Thank you Andsome,The guide will be useful. I remember choosing to install windows XP on the old partition. I guess I should try to remove the old partitions, then create a new one as described in the guide.I have never heard of partitions before, do you have some information on what that is? Belatucadrus
Another possible cause is overheating, have you checked that all cooling fans, particularly the one on the CPU are running freely ?

If you have more than one drive, the other drives will not be affected by the new install, just make sure that you refer to your C drive for the install. I have C and D, D is for storage of my photo's.

Hornblower
Puh!I have now formated and reinstalled windows in a new partition. Did even do a defragmentation of the C-disk.Unfortunately program still insist on stalling. After approximately five minutes it stops and I get the message that the program doesn´t answer. Same as before, that is.I think I have found the error blog. It has indicated some errors today but no new ones appear after the program has stopped...Very confused, would be very grateful for some idea on how to fix this.Don´t know how to check the fans but they sound alright (for what that is worth : )
-pops-
What errors is the event viewer telling you?If your machine is fairly modern there should be some temperature monitoring software available (often part of the motherboard accessories). You might want to have a look at the temperatures, especially of the CPU.
Hornblower
Hi Pops,I´ve found the event viewer. It doesnt record anything at the time the program closes down. I checked the application folder, security folder and system folder.I think I have a temperature messurement in BIOS but can only reach it during start up - process. My computer is fairly modern (about 3 years old). What should the temperatures be? Do you know if it is possible to check previous temperatures (if so, i could enter BIOS end check temperature when program stalls).
-pops-
I am surprised there is no motherboard monitor. What is the make of motherboard? The maximum allowable temperatures depend on the type of CPU and on the limits set in the BIOS (which should NOT be changed without a very good reason). You can get an independent monitor for free from Speedfan click here. This will connect up with all the monitoring devices in your machine and display them on screen for you.I have not used Speedfan myself but I have heard that it does as it is supposed to do. Hornblower
Thanks for the link,I will search for a motherboard monitor on my computer. If I can´t find it I will try downloading speedfan. I have a MSI motherboard model KT3 Ultra2.
-pops-
For your motherboard click here and scroll down to "Utility" - MSI PC alert 4.
Hornblower
Hi Pops,Really appreciate your help with this!I have now installed the PC alert and it works fine. Right now the CPU temp is 52 C and Syst temp 39 C. The CPU fan is spinning with 4687 rpm and the other two fans are still. Is it possible to find the max temp for my CPU and system somewhere? Is it somewhere in BIOS? I have an AMD Athlon 1,25 Ghz processor.Should I perhaps run a program and check the PC alert when the program stalls? -pops-
The temperatures are a bit on the high side but, considering the weather at the moment, not exceptional. You should be able to find the limit settings for temperatures in the BIOS in the manual which, if you don't have it can be obtained from click here. There will be a temperature limit on the CPU itself to stop it self-destructing but that is very high >90 deg C.Your suggestion about running a program and checking the temperature changes is the way to go. :)Are the two auxiliary fans actually still or is it just that they are not being monitored? Hornblower
In BIOS I found CPU - critical temperature: DisabledI tried running a program and when it stalled checked the temperature. It had gone up a little, 54 C on the CPU.I´m not sure about the other fans, perhaps I only have one fan...Do you think it is a temperature problem or could it be something else?
-pops-
Again, 54 deg is not excessively high. What does the motherboard manual say about CPU temperature settings?
Hornblower
The manual dosen´t specify what the limit settings are.It only states that there is a Thermal Protection Maechanism that will shut down the system if the CPU reaches abnormal temperatures. So, i haven´t managed to find what the critical temperature is. Can´t find it in the manual and not by searching the different menues in BIOS :(
-pops-
If you can "enable" the critical temperature setting I believe it will open a new section where you can tell it the settings you want to have a limits. The limits I have set for my AMD XP3000 machine is 75 deg CPU temperature and 55 deg motherboard temp. At the moment it is reading 56 deg CPU and 40 deg motherboard.
Hornblower
You were right,When I changed to enable, I got to choose limits for critical CPU temp. I set the limit to 75 C, then tried running program again. Same thing happens, program stops after about 5 min. When pressing control+alt+delete, the activity status showes "not answering".Could it be something other than heating problem, if so what...? Grateful for any ideas. -pops-
Well, I think we can eliminate overheating now but, don't consider what we've achieved so far a waste of time. You have made some positive improvements to your machine. At the moment, I am stuck as to what to do next. I'l have to think about it but, if others have any possible solutions, well here's where to send them :)
Hornblower
Absoulely not waste of time. I am learning a lot becouse of this!! :D
Hornblower
Hi,The problem seems to have gone from bad to worse since yesterday. Yesterday program stalled after about 5 min and ctrl+alt+delete indicated status as "not answering".Today the program closes down abruptly after a few minutes. No error message or anything. Have checked the event viewer but no logs there. Have also reactivated dr watson and then runned the program but Dr Watson indicated no errors. How could it be that program closes down without a warning and no way to see what is going wrong?????
