At the moment after arguing about bills with NTL I am on 4MB broadband for a period of 6 months at £16.99, and for three months free phone calls, we just pay the line rental. When these two run out I will be contacting them again. I am reluctant to go back to them for cable TV as we had so many problems with their digital boxes. Thos Posted August 3, 2006 Report Share Posted August 3, 2006 I saw the programme and was certainly impressed with the French offering. I think the fact that we are so far behind is because of the obstinacy of BT in not permitting the unbundling of loop lines in their exchanges. Only now are we beginning to see the benefits and even now I suspect BT are dragging their feet. I have registered for the Sky product and hope to hear from them soon. -pops- Posted August 3, 2006 Author Report Share Posted August 3, 2006 It's not only the obstinacy of BT it's their long time lack of investment in the infrastructure of the telephone network. Apparently some of the cables they still use for their network were laid a century ago and just don't have the capacity to do anything more than what they ae doing at present - and they are corroding away at an increasing rate. That would have solved some of the problems. :0If you are referring to fibre optics then I think there are a few stumbling blocks:1. It would be very expensive for BT to lay fibre optics throughout the UK.2. I think that OFCOM puts controls on what they can do as if they did lay a fibre optic network then they would be in a powerful position as ISP's would be obliged to rent the lines from BT.Consequently, I expect OFCOM would regulate BT so that they could only rent the lines out at a discount price which wouldn't please BT shareholders (I expect) as they would want to see a return on their investment i.e. the costs of laying the fibre optic network.
