doug Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 OK, OK, OK I'm about to re-format and re-install WinXPPro.Fed up with repeated crashes when loading personal settings during boot up and system sometimes acting like treacle; have tried pruning the system like Startup Inspector, CC De-frag (dklite) etc so I'm going to go the whole hog. Was going to wait until I got my TalkTalk connection up with a new modem but thought I'd bite the bullet. Have got my original disk and the SP2 disk.Hope I've got all my equipment driver disks to hand.Have copied my address book, then first snag! Where to I go to find my Outlook Express e-mail files; somewhere in my documents I think. I've made a backup copy of my documents but could some of my problems be in there? So if you can see what I'm up to I want to make a clean install. I've made fresh copies onto a spare drive of - AVG, ZA, ewido dklite, MSTAG i a dedicated folder. If there's anything else suggested I'll copy those then burn the whole lot to CD/DVD as appropriate.Wondering about the best way to copy over all the WIN updates had a look at Chris's guide but it seemed a bit complex to me ( I'm only an old duffer and don't think I've got the appropriate drivers).So Help and suggestions please. -pops- Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 What I would do, doug, is use a new hard drive and do a complete fresh install on that. When you've loaded all your normal programs on to the new drive, you can then re-install your old drive as a slave and transfer your files from that. I've been over efficient saving them to several different folders on the other drive. I'm trying to sort out which were the latest. Also some the filenames don't seem to infer which program was which. Hmmm about the SP2 disk, I do have the M$ that came by post. Will that be OK? It then stores the data ready for the F&STW on the new machine to re-install it.I used to suggest the software a lot but, after some failures with it and it being restricted in what it will copy to, I've tended to give it a wide berth. When it works, it's excellent but be very careful you don't overwrite the information you are transferring until you've successfully transferred it. djohn Posted September 13, 2006 Report Share Posted September 13, 2006 If you have the SP2 disk doug then there are still about 64 updates from Microsoft to install and seeing your on dialup at the mo, [Are you?] then might be a good idea for one of us to download them all, burn and post to you. When I booted up my lads new desktop at the weekend it had SP2 with updates right through to July this year but as soon as I connected the broadband it downloaded 32 updates from Microsoft! I've installed Windows Updates Downloader v2.21 Finalfrom the Simplyguides site but I cannot find out how to download all the updates in one go.
