modems

I'm currently looking to put an old pc on the net, via dial up.

It's a viglen ??, desktop, one usb port and low profile, ideally I'm looking for an internal pci/external serial hardware modem, (I also want to run linux on this PC). Owing to the lack of usb ports a USB external modem is last resort, has anyone come across any on their travels.

PC World are no help nor does their search list low profile /half height modems.

Google hasn't been much of a friend in this case, throws up so many hits to kelkoo etc that my eyes are seeing kkkkkk :blink:

If you are intending running linux I suggest you abandon the idea of a PCI modem they mostly seem to be winmodems using some of the MS processing and are useless with Linux. I have had best results with an ethernet connection using Linux. I am using a BT Voyager (ex eBay) . Ebay might also find you an ethernet PCI card.

I'm aware of that, thus looking for hardware modems, ethernet/adsl not an option currently for this set up :(

Thanks for those links -pops- I note linux drivers are available for the nexsis modem, have aked a question of scan regarding height tho.

Still interested in any other suggestions

Scan have some external USB modems

Note that I'm not pushing Scan it's just that they came up first in my searching. I'm sure ebuyer or dabs will do similar.

Found this as another external option, similar to the ones used for our MOT connection, (except price thankfully).

However there's no great rush at the moment, and I've now found a couple of low profile options (when they come into stock  )

Thanks for the input so far. I can still search for different options over the next couple of weeks.
