Acronis 10

I've been getting nagging emails from Acronis about upgrading to their new version.

As it's been out a few weeks and I've not heard any "teething trouble" comments about it, I decided to give it a go and replace/upgrade my version 8 which has been serving me well for a number of years.

I went on the Acronis website and saw the special offer prices $39.99 for the full version, $29.99 for the upgrade. OK, I thought, I'll go for the upgrade. I clicked on the proceed and it hung. Started again. It hung again. I though it was because I was doing it through Firefox so I opened IE7 - wouldn't load at all.

After much mucking about and swearing I eventually got through to the shopping cart and placed my order. It wouldn't accept my credit card. I thought sod it and gave up. Why the - - - do they make it so difficult to buy their product?

Came here and clicked on the Acronis offer at the top of the page. Not only is the FULL version $29.00 (less than the "real" upgrade price) it accepted my credit card without question.

As the placement of the orders is manual, I have to wait a little while for the download but I have a receipt for the money paid out.

I'll keep you posted on how things go.

Email with download instructions arrived at 19-30.

The message contains a link to the Acronis site and a serial number for the download.

Download proceeded very easily and I've now copied the program to CD.

Note the program is much larger than my Version 8 (25MB) at 100MB.

Will leave until tomorrow to install as I'm going out now.

Well, good news and bad news.

The good news is that it installed on my main and my subsidiary (kids) machines without a problem. The third machine refused to boot after installation. A got the ASUS startup flash screen and that was it. After a few minutes a message appeared saying that WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG-CORRUPT OR MISSING and to insert the XP disc and press "r" - you know the sort of thing - Windows was FUBAR. I didn't even get as far as looking at what it had installed.

I am now restoring from an old backup.

From what I've seen, andsome, there isn't anything very spectacular different in the version 10.

I had wondered about an upgrade and like you, pops, had looked at the Acronis site and the site linked above and thought I might go for the download version sometime. I guess that with your expertise, you would not be very interested in the "free training CD" which is offered with it but I wondered if that was included in your package? (in view of the restrictions on posting outside North America)

Thos.

Ironic, innit. Something that's supposed to save you machine from disaster actually causes one :(

I've sorted out the problem - the drive I was trying to back up was about to expire with loads of sectors not working. I've restored from an old backup on to a new drive and installed the new Acronis and the multitudes of updates etc that have accumulated since I made the restoration backup.

Thos, when you get the details from the Acronis at the top of the page you also get links to loads of useful information which you can download about Acronis and how to use it.

If you are without a backup solution, I would recommend it. If you already have Acronis, I don't see much point in upgrading if you have a fairly recent version (I had version 8).
