Thos
I am considering buying a new computer and have had a look at various manufacturers including local builders. I came across THIS SITE and I wondered whether anyone in the forum had any knowledge of it.If and when I do decide to order, I will have a lot of need for help on transferring data from old (Windows XP) to new (Vista Home Premium) and shredding my data before parting with my old machine but that is some time away yet.Thos. trackrat
They seem to be allright.http://forum.micromart.co.uk/Topic171870-1...t=pc+specialistOr perhaps not.http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cf...7&forumid=2I always find Novatech have a very good name, I have never brought one of there computers but have had lots of parts of them, and only once had a problem which they sorted out by collecting the faulty motherboard at there cost and sending me a replacement, all done within 3 days. andsome
Visit one or two local builders on a Saturday when they are likely to be busy, and mingle with other customers, and get opinions on the shops reputation. Then return on a quiet day and discuss your requirements with the shop owner. You will get a machine built for YOUR requirements, with the components that YOU want. You will not be offered so called FREE software programs that you will never use. Delivery should be within a few days only, and you have help at hand locally should anything go wrong. NO hanging around for ages on premium rate help lines. You know it makes sense. :D :D
-pops-
PCSpecialist have had some EXTREMELY negative reactions on various forums:http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/online-shops/pcspe...-co-uk/reviews/http://www.ciao.co.uk/Reviews/www_pcspecia..._co_uk__6267622If you can't/don't want to build yourself, I suggest you take up andsome's idea and visit a local man when they're busy - don't buy then, just try and earwig the conversations to find out if they know what they're talking about. THEN go back at a quieter time and discuss your requirements.Alternatively, can you ask around friends etc. to see if they know of someone who will build for you? I used to have a nice little sideline of building computers for people but, I now only do it for my son's business requirements.

andsome
I have never regretted doing things this way, I bought mine four years ago. A couple of minor problems were put right in about fifteen minutes. The shop that built mine have now opened up a few miles away, and we have a newish local shop. I recommended a friend to go there, having met the owner earlier. He has been more than satisfied. You just don't know the quality of components in these commercially built computers, and then there's is the problem that you have no idea as to how much they are thrown about on their way to you. My son in law racked up huge phone bills contacting Evesham, and I still don't think that the computer is really right now. Another problem is that some of these people have dedicated software, making it difficult at time to put things right without their help.Make sure that you ask for a full installation disk, it is well worth a little extra money. Thos
Thanks everyone, especially pops and Trackrat for answering my specific query. The firm looked good but the reviews say "take care".I think I mentioned that I am also considering local builders. I haven't yet got anyone in mind but I intend to root around. My son went down this road and has had no end of trouble, the computer going back and forth with constant failures. Unlike andsome's experience though which he has mentioned before, my present machine from Evesham has given me good service during it's 4 years and the odd times I have telephoned I have spoken to a knowledgable person who could converse in language which was easily understandable. The only breakdown was a PSU which failed and which they came out to repair without quibble two days short of it's two year warranty expiration. The current issue of PC Advisor tests Vista ready machines and I am looking at those also.I like the idea of specifying my own components though and that is what caused me to look at the firm mentioned earlier. I am in no hurry, my son has offered to finance this, or at least contribute towards this as a Birthday present.Thos.Thos.
