AlanHo Posted June 5, 2007 Report Share Posted June 5, 2007 I needed to send a letter to a friend in Paris who speaks only a little English - hence decided to do it in French.I opened Microsoft Word 2007 - navigated to Options - and set the language to French - but the typing still came out in perfect English.To check whether it was me - or the computer - I reset the language to Alsation (France) - only to find that the computer still insisted in typing in English.Thinking this might be a "French" thing - I tried various language settings including Arabic, German, Greek, Polish, Spanish, Ukrainian and Yiddish - all with the same result.There is a language setting for English (Ireland). But this doesn't work either. Letters still begin with "Dear sir" rather than "Top o' the morning to yer" and typing crikey fails to produce bejaysus.This seems to be a major fault with the latest version of Word. What happens is your text is sent via the internet to the translation site - then comes back translated. As an experiment I opened the letter to my friend, which was non-technical normal English text and had it translated into French. I then unrolled the french letter into a new document and had that translated from French to English. The result was quite amusing.To add to the fun - I translated some text from English to FrenchThen French to GermanThen German back to English.The result was hilarious.Having an evil streak - I did the same again - this time adding Spanish to the list. The result was almost unintelligible.Hence I need to get back to my original complaint. Mr Gates has provided the facility to select a number of languages in Word 2007 - but they do not work. Even when you select English (USA) rather than English (UK) it fails to work.Type 'Hello' and you would expect to see "Hi"Type 'Got' and you might expect to get "gotten"Type 'Goodbye shopper' and you should get "See y'all agin - have a nice day"Type 'Shrug' and you should get "s*** happens"But no - it just doesn't work. I reckon it is something to do with the disdain that exists between the Americans and Canadians. Mr Gates, who lives in Seattle which is not far from the canadian border, possibly resents the Canadians allowing French to be commonly used and has muted the French language in Word in an attempt to stifle use of the French language.Don't know why he also picked on Zulu's though. If you set the language settings to French then it will spell check for you in French etc... but you have to type the French first, it doesn't translate. Sadly, although I can speak English, Spanish and Yidish I can not speak Rubbish. I am fairly proficient at writing it, but not as good as AlanHo. I hope you have better luck but you should be aware that there is no language setting in Word for 'Rubbish'People who speak rubbish are not catered for which is possibly why some forum members have not upgraded to Vista and Office 2007 - in fact the only languages included beginning with the letter 'R' are Romanian and Russian.
