Have you reset the size of z in the registry

Found the problem...........I had to set it to "emulate a local hard disc" Ive now got 30mb and it works.......!

Whoo wee.....! the pages fly on.......

Ive also done a reboot ,and log on , just to see what happens ,when I loose my temp internet files on shutdown, and there is no difference .........But then I always use a tracks erasor on shutdown anyway which clears out my history....

Impressed.....

Bloody good post ....Boris.....nice one...!

Oh I really hate this because I just know I must be doing something really stupid. :( I put that line in my config.sys file.....(btw there was no Himem.sys line!) When I rebooted I got this message

RAMDRIVE extended memory manager not present.

:( :( :(

This is everything that is in my Config.sys file

device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)

Rem TShoot:

Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

device=c:\windows\ramdrive.sys 12288 /E

I think you need to add the himem.sys line (if its not there) for it to work.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS

See the second ? post in this thread.

Staying logged in - but I have to "disappear" for 1/2 hour - c u about 8.

The ramdrive.sys device driver must be loaded by a DEVICE= or DEVICEHIGH=

command in your config.sys file. The config.sys must have a line like this :-

This gives ALL the parameters - some in red you can leave out

DEVICE=[drive:][path]RAMDRIVE.SYS [DiskSize SectorSize NumEntries ]

[/E | /A]

Parameters

[drive:][path]

Specifies the location of the RAMDRIVE.SYS file.

DiskSize

Specifies how many kb of memory you want to use for the RAM

drive. For example, to create a 640K RAM drive, specify 640. If you

don't specify an amount, RAMDrive will create a 64K RAM drive. You can

specify a value from 4 to 32767. However, you can't specify more memory

than your system has available.

SectorSize

Specifies the disk sector size in bytes. The size can be 128, 256, or

512 bytes. (If you include a SectorSize value, you must also include a

value for DiskSize.)

Generally, you should use the default sector size of 512 bytes.

NumEntries

Limits the number of files and directories you can create in the RAM

drive's root directory. The limit can be from 2 to 1024 entries; the

limit you specify is rounded up to the nearest sector size boundary. If

you do not specify a limit, you can create up to 64 entries in the RAM

drive's root directory. (If you include a value for NumEntries, you must

also include values for DiskSize and SectorSize.).

If there is not enough memory to create the RAM drive as specified,

RAMDrive will try to create it with a limit of 16 directory entries.

This may result in a RAM drive with a different limit from the one you

specified.

Switches

/E

Creates the RAM drive in extended memory.

For RAMDrive to use extended memory, your system must be configured so

that it provides extended memory, and a DEVICE command for the

extended-memory manager (such as HIMEM.SYS) must appear in your

CONFIG.SYS file before the DEVICE command for RAMDRIVE.SYS. In general,

it is best to create a RAM drive in extended memory if your system has

extended memory.

/A

Creates the RAM drive in expanded memory.

For RAMDrive to use expanded memory, your system must be configured so

that it provides expanded memory, and the DEVICE command for the

expanded-memory manager (such as EMM386, 386MAX, CEMM, or QEMM) must

appear in your CONFIG.SYS file before DEVICE command for RAMDRIVE.SYS.

Preceding the ramdrive.sys there must be a himem.sys line

So Nel -

Suppose you want to allocate 12288k i.e. 12MB of extended memory to RAMDRIVE.SYS

and create a RAM drive that has 512-byte sectors and a limit of 1024 entries

in its root directory (the maximum)

Your particular config.sys entries should be in this order.

Device=c:\windows\himem.sys

Device(or Devicehigh)=c:\windows\ramdrive.sys 12288 512 1024 /E

Device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)

Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

Rem TShoot:

Also make sure that himem.sys and ramdrive.sys are actually in C:\Windows ?

Hope this is clear enough ? - just found hard copy of my old notes and trying to "simplify" them :D

what happens with your I/cache when its full does it just overwrite files in the ramdrive.

Never actually filled one as far as I noticed - so yes.

I think its like Homer's brain - when you take in 2 more new facts - 2 old ones go out the back ? :D

Yes Boris it is great........ you edited your post though!!! Did I detect the latest was typed through gritted teeth??? :) :D

I have decided to give the Ram Drive a miss..... at least on my system as it is now. I did what you said and when I re-booted I got this scarey message;

While initializing device IOS

Error: Real mode system memory allocation failed.

Eeeek!!! that's it......everything stuck there!! Luckily I could boot into safe mode and edit the config.sys file back to the way it was.

Ho hum........ think I'll go back to my Paint Shop Pro tutorials :) :D

well i have a ram disk that says a max of 511MB

Obviously i cant use all that. However, i have set it to (at the moment) 99MB with no problems

Just wanted to see if it would set to that and has, although it has taken up about 10mb max and thats with about 7 hours of use on the computer, with my boy messing about on the net etc etc

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 2 weeks later...

Something has cropped up on my PC which has caused me to delete my ram drive...

As fast as it is .... I cannot get my drive to work and my system restore ....

As restore has saved my but a few times on something Ive done or deleted incorrectly out of ignorance ,Ive decided that its not worth the risk to run without it ......So my temp files are back on my hard drive .....

I think the problem with the restore is that on system shut down the temp files get deleted , so there is nothing left to go into te restore .....

I could be wrong .....

Unless anybody has a suggestion (Boris) how to get both to run at the same time ...its off ....

Fast while it lasted ....ah well...!
