Tankus Posted July 14, 2007 Report Share Posted July 14, 2007 My dad was from Carmarthen , (ferryside ...on the Towy estuary ) ..heh ...the joys of long school summers on the beach when I was a nipper .... Take a spade and go on the mud banks at ferryside ..(be very carefull of the tide... 35 ft tidal race ... It drown's the stupid and slow ). the cockles are in season ..... nothing beats them ..freshly cooked with bacon and eggs and a dollop of lava bread from Carmathen market , a snow of flaked oats on top....bit of balck pepper and a crusty hunk of bread with salted farmhouse fresh butter ......Im salivating while writting this ... soak them overnight in salted water in a bucket and they will de grit themselves ... a nice way to spend a few hours on a summers afternoon ... If you time it right with the sun setting down behind Llanstephan , the views across the bay are ..inspiring The best cockles are on the Ferry side side of the towy , but the best beach is on the Llanstephan side , superb views from the castle if you don't mind the climb ... But you have to go back upstream to Carmathen and back out again (heh the ferry was about a centuary and a half ago ) to get to Llanstephan BBC image not one of mine LLanstephan castle from ferrysidenot been to the Gardens yet myself but my sister rather liked the slate beds gave her ideas for a low maintenance garden for rental Visit Kidwelly castle ...Its small but fairly intact , (with a complete floored Norman solar ...that's rare) ....nice pub opposite inside the town walls thats also an antiques shop ....you can buy most of the stuff that you see while suppin yer ale ...Does food but Ive never actually eaten there ....!
