gordythegouge Posted July 30, 2007 Report Share Posted July 30, 2007 Bearing in mind how diificult it is for first-time buyers to get on the property ladder....then ikea probably fills the niche reserved for cheap, utilitarian and functional furniture for those with limited funds! I hate the place myself, after being dragged round on several occasions whilst the daughters were furnishing their nests for the first time, but there is bang for your buck as they say in the place. If they are happy with what they get for the money then it's fine.But it seems to me that some people on here are so full of themselves that they have lost the ability to see another point of view without grinding it down. Without the likes of Tesco and Ikea some people would be starting up house with very little. And has anyone been to a Boot sale recently? Absolute rubbish for sale at prices higher than the afore mentioned shops. The charity shops are the same - people pricing up the goods live on another planet.DW - here in the uk there are strict rules about selling used white goods or any electrical appliances - even the auction houses don't sell them anymore. Looking forward to it.We have only ever bought one piece of furniture from Ikea. It was a free-standing tall unit for the kitchen. Whilst not being especially keen on modern minimalist-style furniture, I must admit that this one is very robust and I think it looks good. However, it will become redundant soon, when we have the kitchen refitted. :D There are lots of other items which are excellent value. Both of our 'children' have used the store over the years. They seemed to like the designs at the time.One of my favourite kitchen outlets is LAKELAND. They are not the cheapest, but I love their ideas and designs. The after-sales service is excellent too. We too like to buy the best that we can afford, but are also in the market for bargains. I just don't consider that a bargain piece of kitchen equipment should cut someones finger. We started off married life with a utility bedroom suite. For information, this was stuff that was produced very cheaply during, and for some years after the war, and had to meet certain minimum standards. We had a cheap carpet runner in the hall and up the stairs, and a cheap but resonable quality transistor radio. My grandfather gave us a set of old dining chairs and table. We frequently use charity shops, in fact I buy almost all my books from them, and then return them so that they can be sold again. I have just ordered a second hand book from Amazon. We have frequently picked up good value items for the grandchildren in these shops. You just have to pick and choose what you buy. We have also bought second hand from newspaper adverts. We only ever went to a boot sale once, and most of the stuff was literally junk, except for stuff which was obviously scarcely used or even brand new, and made us rather suspicious of possible theft or counterfeit. An ex police chief inspector neighbour told us that as we are very close to several motorways, they made several arrests at these events over the years, as stuff was stolen at night, shipped down the motorways and resold at boot sales all within hours. Also, locally at Cannock in a very large weekly boot sale there were several arrests recently and several thousand counterfeit items seized. So we avoid these events.
