Windows updates are trying my patience

I keep on getting an update titled Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 and I click on install and it starts to do its thing, then a box comes up and says it cannot install, I have tried doing it manually from the Microsoft web site and get the same results.

I get the same results for the WGA update as well, it will not install (some would say that is a good thing).

Even stranger I went to history on the web and it said there was no history, so I checked in add and remove and no updates listed at all.

I have not used this computer for about 3 weeks so has something got inside it and nicked my updates. :cray:

I cannot seem to find anything on Google about this, so has anyone any ideas about this.

In the security center it says everything is OK.

Yup got a CD from Boris with ~150 MB of updates for W98 SE. Had other info from other people as well. Thanks to all will report on progress. Have just got back having uplifted the PC in question. Spent most of my time on my knees unraveling all the cables. Having had 3 G'children off and on these last 2 days and taken Anne through to the hospital twice - I knackered. Sorry this is well off topic now but have just poured a very large sensation so don't expect and sensible posts from me tonight!

Hi all the problem is solved thanks to VOG (very old git) :P but a lot more knowledgeable than me.

As i have not used that computer for a few weeks, I had forgotten that I had unistalled a program called Bricopacks, which was probably the cause. ( a program for customizing XP)

I was a bit wary of the link he provided as it was a beta, but i set a restore point and then rebooted to find I had 87 microsoft updates.
