andsome Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Fair enough, put it down to a misunderstanding. I just feel that like much else today, Christmas has become too commercial. As I said, I am not religious, but have always looked at Christmas as a time to get together and enjoy family and friends company. Having said that, on several occasions we have attended a carol service in Lichfield cathedral, simply because of the enjoyable atmosphere there. Today, there seems to be too much emphasis on spend spend spend. So many families seem to work out a budget so that everyone has a equal amount of money spent on them, the actual thought doesn't seem to account for so much now. As mentioned previously, many garden centres now close off a section in July or August to start getting it ready for Christmas. Many kids unfortunately now don't think about how nice it is for the family to be together, all they are thinking about is how many £200 plus gadgets will they be given. We will be bombarded with advertising to buy buy buy. No sooner will it be over than the advertising will start for easter eggs. Years ago, we used to send birthday, mothers and fathers day, and Christmas cards. Now, I'm afraid that we are inundated with adverts for cards for all occasions. Maybe I am cynical now, but I do yearn for things much less commercial, and more family orientated, as in days gone by when we did not have so much. How many of you remember with pleasure, how lovely it was to get a comic annual, a few sweets, the odd cheap toy and some fruit for Christmas, weren't you happier? Any way, I hope that I have cleared up any misunderstanding. I remember hanging up a stocking (can't remember whose), which on christmas morning would contain fruit (tangerines etc).We were not a wealthy family, so gifts were, as you say andsome, much more moderate than now. I always loved it though.Being the youngest of four, with a nine year gap between myself and my sister next in age terms, it was like having not just one mum & dad... Other son and family will be there as well. I can see what will happen, though, it will be just as every year where we do all the preparation and work, just in a different house but, then again, perhaps not.It was a bit disconcerting the other day, though. On a visit to Eric we went to see our Christmas dinner - it's a quite large pig and it was walking around its pen being fed apple pulp (from the local cider making) and acorns.
