I must confess I am rather surprised at the lack of a significant and lively thread on this forum about the Sudan actions. Perhaps we are all worried about treading on cultural sensitivities.

The BBC blog is doing a splendid job though with about 98% of the contributions entirely in accordance with my own views.

It is beyond all logic, Alan. I am surprised how a culture that was so far in advance of most others, that gave us the "numerals" that are used virtually world wide today, and which was so far ahead in numeracy and literature, can have developed thinking patterns which can allow the occurrence of teddy bear madness.

Isn’t it strange that all the major religions believe in the one God, and yet they are prepared to slaughter each other, for religious reasons, for not believing the right things about Him/It?

Isn’t it strange that this God, who they claim was the creator of all, allows some of his creations to destroy others of his creation without lifting a hand (or bolt of lightening) to prevent them doing it?

Isn’t it strange that this same God, who is all powerful and omnipotent, should need weak, but self important, religious leaders to decide when He has been insulted/offended/abused and to mete out punishment, (even when that punishment is against what they preach) when He Himself must be capable of meting out suitable punishment ….if necessary? In His infinite omnipresence He could equally prevent the insult/ offence/abuse from occurring in the first place.

I would feel better about it if the so-called moderate muslims who claim that these nutters are not truly representative of their faith would do something positive to demonstrate against the insanity.

But they won't.

The muslim leaders obviously consider that their faith is so fragile that it can be usurped by a toy teddy bear. It's about as logical as our PC brigade taking the golliwog off a jar of marmalade.

The World is slowly becoming a total madhouse - I used to feel sorry for my children's and my grand children's generation who will have to live with this - but no longer - when I concluded that it is their age group who are visiting this plague upon us.

Day after day we read of yet another act of religious fervour that brings organised religion further and further into disrepute - with the muslims being top of the premier league. I now regard followers of organised religion as victims of brain washed insanity. As I have said before here - it is one thing to believe in an omnipotent God - quite another to place slavish trust in the self appointed power hungry men in funny frocks, strange hats and ornate embellishments of whatever so-called faith. It is even worse when those same "leaders" are also political leaders of the flock.

I am 100% in agreement with these views. It is only fair to point out that All religion means trouble. Look at the wanton slaughter meted out by the different versions of Christianity over the years, as well as that meted out by differing versions of Islam. One bunch of Christians kills another as well as killing other religions, one bunch of Muslims kills another bunch. Christians and Muslims kill each other, Muslims kill Jews, Jews kill Muslims, Muslims kill Hindus, and so on and so on. Everyone has the right to believe in a God if they wish, but NO ONE has the right to kill in that Gods name. A pox on the lot of them.

I agree with you Alan. It's the self-appointed intermediaries who cause all the trouble in all organised religions. It's the main reason why I don't attend a church anymore. Who are these 'holier-than-thou' people telling me how to behave when they themselves, at least many of them, are not keeping to the rules.

In our present day the ones I see as true Christians are the members of the Salvation Army, doing their work, quietly, without judging, at the sharp edge. That, to me, is what real religion is all about. Amen.

Unfortunately when people take out extreem views on anything it will cause a lot of grief.

I think at the moment religions are a mess if their is such a thing as a 'god' I doubt they would be happy about what has come out of religions.

Their is no reason to follow religion so closely, the idea behind the 10 commandments was to make it easy for people to follow in their footsteps and be a good person.

For our generation I think we need to find hope in something else, being in such a close community we cannot follow the old teachings, we have evolved and so must the 'rules'.

My point is that you don't need ANY religion to be good, or do good work. Goodness is in the person, not a religion.

Since you are almost certainly a devout galvanised chauvinist - is this not a contradiction of your real beliefs. It isn't exactly the milk of human kindness to assume that our lovely ladies enjoy a bit of rough stuff.....

, the idea behind the 10 commandments was to make it easy for people to follow in their footsteps and be a good person.

The ten commandments were, according to a group of well respected Jewish archaeologists and theologians, written not by Moses, who they say never existed, but by Josiah who either wrote, or had written for him, the Torah. This is what is now the first five books of the Old Testament, and was in effect the basis of what is now Judaism. It was written, they claim, as a historic justification for Josiah's claim to be the qualified ruler of Jerusalem when north and south Judea was united.

This may have been the first example of the, by now universal, ploy of using a supernatural controller to hand out the rules and also mete out hellfire (or whatever) to those who disobeyed.

Since many of the religions of the world have sprung from Judaism these rules have been become the yard stick for much of the world. It is not surprising really because they are fairly sound, even if your neighbour do not have an ass.

An interesting slant on religion, its history and structure.

I wonder if we start them young by saying to kids - if you don't behave yourself the bogey man will get you....

Two or three years ago there was an hour long programme which featured these Jewish archaeologists and theologians, and their work. They unearthed much that was quite revealing. I was surprised that it was broadcast because so many of their discoveries were contradictions of things in the Torah. Examples;- King David was little more than a tribal chief. Moses was entirely fictitious, How could anyone take forty years to walk from Egypt to Israel and leave no trace what-so-ever? And how could so many people, allegedly vital to the well being of Egypt, just walk out without their being any record in Egyptian hieroglyphics. They traced Jericho but it was nothing so grand as described and there was no sign of any fallen wall. And so it went on. They were able to trace the movement of the northern peoples moving south to Jerusalem just prior to Josiah.

All very interesting. I would like to see it again.

I think the idea is start them young in believing you do wrong you go to hell where you spend eternity being tortured.

Depends what you consider to be good. Fundamentalist Muslims seem to believe that a load of virgins await them in Heaven if they die for the cause killing infidels. I have seen various numbers mentioned, between thirty and seventy two.
