Partition problem

Don't think I'm in the do do yet, but I need to resize my primary partition of my main HDD. Originally my setup was with a 40 GB main HDD containing my WinXP OS. My second disk is a 320 GB for data. I also had a USB drive (Icy Box) containing an *) GB drive that I used for backups via Acronis True image 8. Today I succumbed and bought a 500 GB Maxtor USB drive and will be using that for my backups. So I carefully did a fresh Backup to the Maxtor, removed the Original C drive - sitting safely on my desk for panic replacement if necessary. I then fitted the 80 GB drive and booted using the Acronis boot disc and restored the OS to it. All is working BUT the drive is only the 40 GB from the original disk. The remainder of the disk is unused as another unallocated 40 GB. Just tried downloading the Partition Magic 8.5 trial and it says I've got to buy the full version to expand the dive to it's maximum. Any suggestions as to how to achieve my aim. Don't want to have to buy any software as management only sent me into Newcastle to but some shirts in the sales, reluctantly bought some but the succumbed to temptation and bought the new drive as well. Broke the bank so doing. Management is not pleased and says the shirts are no good so she's dragging me back tomorrow to change them. So please help save me folks :paperbag1:

I need some help here chaps. In a nutshell I haven't a clue as to what I'm doing. It'd a good job Acronis is doing it's job so I can either restore the copy of the original disk or even re-fit the original disk. Had several goes today, to be honest I didn't understand what the 2 links would do for me. I partially re-installed WinXP Pro and used the partition facility to create the full 80 GB NTFS structure. The tried restoring the files from one of the backup's I had but after a couple of hours thought that it was literally restoring the application files so in frustration killed that and re-installed the full backup. This, of course, the gave me the split drive again. On the first disk I have 2 basic healthy file structures. I just didn't understand applications in the 2 downloads given above. So all I'm looking for is to extend the first partition to use up the 2nd. As I've got to gut my study shortly - herself has decided that it has to be re-decorated next week I've found or discovered that I have lost a couple of my original installation disks. So until I locate them I'm relying solely on these backups that I have.

So would someone kindly talk me through what I need to do to achieve what I want. Then with the very large backup drive I now have I can then backup the larger volume. Please

Doug.

I have used Paragon Partition Manager and it has a very simple menu structure. My Partition Manager 8.5 Personal copy was included on the cover disc of the Personal Computer World Magazine last October and is the full program.

It shows a diagram of each partition on each drive and also shows any free space.

There is a menu item which allows you to redistribute free space by adding it to an existing partition.

With paragon it really is very easy. I am not sure which programme you are using and whether the menus work in a similar way. I have sent you a PM to try and help.

If you tried gparted Doug I will have a go at explaining it.

Load Gparted and it should show your two partitions as hda1/hda2.

Right click hda2 and click UNMOUNT.

Right click hda1 and click.UNMOUNT.

Right click hda1 and select RESIZE.

it will tell you the maximum amout you can resize the partition to.

In the box set the maximun amount (It is quicker to delete the amount and retype the new amount in the box than use the up arrow to do it).

Then click apply on the top bar.

After it has completed, reboot windows and you will get Windows doing a disk check then it should boot into Windows.

I had a problem with partitioning a Maxtor drive when I put a box together for one of managements friends. I have forgoton the fine detail but I think it was something to do with a MAXTOR structure peculiarity. There exists, however, a downloadable utility called Maxblast that facilitates things. I have Maxblast 4 and I am sure there must by now be a 5 or a 6.

Yes there is :-

Thanks for all the feedback fellows. I've been promised Partition Magic 8.5 so will report back as and when. Part of my problem was not understanding what Acronis 8 was doing for me so I must do some detailed reading in case I do this again. The fault seems to have been restoring the full image of the smaller disk which promptly changed the bigger disc to look like the smaller one. Since then I've done a couple of different backups. The full disk image is very quick taking about 22 mins for 40 GB but only 16 GB actual. Restoring using the Acronis recovery disk is just as quick. However, just doing a files and data backup take 2 to 3 times longer. I may have to start a separate thread so I can get a better understanding. Even so I certainly feel so much secure having been playing with it.

Well I'm totally out of the dodo. After having lots of plays finally managed to get myself sorted. finished up part re-installing WinXP to reformat the disk to it's maximum size, then used the Acronis recovery disk to re-install the backup. This time I used the partition only option not the full disk. everything is now working very well. Now having got the full disk operational. my next hobby is to progressively remove as much as I can to reduce the number of processes running to speed my system. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Will do Boris, a bit later. Just spent the whole day upside down fitting replacement taps in the wash basin. This is poked away in a corner and I now ache in every joint, so having a bit of catch up.
