A Traumatic couple of days

We normally have our e.5 year old G'son to stay with us from Wednesday afternoon 'till Thurs night when No.1 daughter or son-in-law collects him from work. Lately we have also been having youngest G'daughter with us on thursday as well and No.2 daughter or hubby collects her on Thursday after they finish work. We then are shattered and go to bed early ish.

This week we met up with an old colleague for lunch on Wednesday. I was at the carvery collecting the meal for my wife when my mobile rang - forgotten to switch it off out of courtesy to the other diners. It was No.2 daughter - would I go and house sit her house as she had gas problems and the repair people were having to dig up and renew pipes.

It turned out that they had been smelling gas in their garage and the "Gas Board" had been out and made a repair but that morning the smell was more intense so the repair people were back to do pipe replacement. all upstream of the meter. They had excavated their drive in front of the garage and got down to the yellow plastic gas pipe, clamped it then cut through it only to find that it contained their electric supply cable and they had had a bit of a spark and had cut off all electric supply. So they would all have to bunk up at ours 'till repairs had been carried out. So we returned early Susan deposited G'daughter with us and had to bolt off to work. I went round for a sneb only to find 2 gas repair vans and 2 electric repair vans. Work was on hold waiting for a heavy electric crew to arrive for extensive excavation work. The upshot was we had a very crowded household last night more so than at Christmas when we slept twice the number but that had been planned.

Today the temporary repairs had been completed by mid-day - the crews having worked through the night. So they are back home pro tem. The Elf and Safety people are to be involved as it appears that it could have been a fatal incident and all the houses on their Estate may have to have their electric supply renewed. You do not feed electric cables through yellow pipes that colour is reserved solely for gas, it's red - I think - for electric and blue for water. This was obviously a major construction blunder and there is no information as to how many houses have been built that way.

Tonight we are more shattered than usual and will probaly be up the wooden hill early.

Forgot to say that for No.2 Son-in-law it was much worse. After all the initial problems yesterday he arrived at work to be informed that the unit where he worked was having to close because of local aurthority cutbacks. Then when arrived here to stay the night his exhaust blew as he pulled onto our drive.
