The Ba**ards strike again

I have just had a call from my bank's security people to inform me, after 1: a lot of checking up that they had got the right person and 2: just what I had used my debit card for lately, that some lousy individual, born out of wedlock, had taken over £750 out of my account recently.

You can't beat an open society where all the layabouts from Eastern Europe, and far beyond, are welcomed with open arms and free eyetests.

Last year I was in Argos and wanted to pay by credit card. When the cashier entered the details, she was told to phone the card company. When she did so, they wanted to speak to me. They wanted to know just about everything to ensure that they had the right person, (fair enough). They then agreed that this one transaction could go ahead, but I must then consider the card to be cancelled. I was asked that when I got home, to telephone them on the number on the back of my latest bill. When I did so, they told me that in common with several others my card had been compromised and would have to be reissued. They went through my latest purchases with me so that my bill could be adjusted. I had to wait for several days for a new card with a different number.

I had a similar experience last autumn when in France. Visa would not accept my card and i was asked to call them when I got home. Fortunately I always carry more than one card with me - so I was still able to pay bills etc.

It transpired that someone had spent literally 1 Euro on the card - followed the next day by a 860 Euros - on clothing in a shop in Amsterdam. How Visa suspected it was fraudulent I know not - but the money was credited back to my card and a new card issued. My only purchase in Holland that month - was some computer stuff from an internet computer component retailer which I thought was UK based - but later discovered it was based in Holland. I can't be sure that this was the source of the leak - but I will not use them again just in case.

It appears from the discussion I had with the bank this morning, that the details may have been taken (somehow, somewhere) weeks or months ago and stored or sold. I suppose if the details are kept for a time the trail is less easy to follow.

If you PM me your full card details - including security no, inside leg measurement etc - I don't mind trying to use it for a purchase to test whether it is now secure for you. That's what friends are for.

That is indeed a very kind and neighbourly gesture, Alan. I am, however, precluded from taking up your kind offer by the fact that I do not have my new card to hand yet. I presume it will be some time next week. Rest assured that should the need arise, I will bear you in mind.

Both my wife and I signed up for this service. Combined cost of $20/month but in this day and age I found it well worth it.

Don't know if it is available across the pond though.

Sorry to read about your problems catgate.

Quite a few banks and insurance companies offer policies in the UK.

Most cost in the range $80 US to $150 per year depending on extent of cover. It appears from your figure to be more expensive in the USA.

Typical one here

I would rather depend on a service providing active monitoring and protection against identity theft and credit theft vs. an after the fact company reimbursing me for my losses due to identity theft and credit theft. B)

An insurance policy offers only the latter..........too little............too late. Damage already done.

I prefer that the damage never occurs and went with a proactive approach.

I already have the Identity Theft and reimbursement fraud cover for my Credit Card free of charge. As I understand it this is what you are paying and individual company to insure you against. This being the case I would seriously consider changing my Credit Card over to a company that offers this as part of their agreement.
