Setting up Internet fax?

Hello!

I have a dell AIO 922 Printer.

And was wondering how I would go about setting up Internet faxing... does it cost extra?

I'm pretty sure that it is all possible just through the internet... how do I set it up?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

I have 1.5GB of RAM.

I am using a DELL Dimension 3000 desktop computer.

How should I go about setting up faxing?

Having tried and failed, I would be interested in the answer to this thread.

I suspected that my 'failure' was due to the ADSL broadband connection.

Maybe someone could point both Panarchy and myself in the right direction. :D

Before cluttering up the computer ask yourself if you will use this facility. How many people are you likely to be faxing, and can they receive e mails instead? :D

You can do it through your phone line, chuck a modem in the pc.

Doesn't a fax require an analogue line for all of its' squeaks and burbles?

No they run through your regular line, thats why you can get them fax machines/phones.

I get fax's through my phone, but I don't have a fax machine so all I hear is the tones the damn machines dont give up either!

In the Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, there appears to be an option to set up a fax.

I have tried using this, but when I attempt to send a fax, it says that there is no dial tone.

Why have a facility which you can't use? I don't understand. :(

Faxing via computer is more trouble than it's worth.

It is essential to use a dial-up modem unless you retain the services of a Fax bureau and that opens all the potential of phone line viruses and other nasties which broadband is pretty much immune from (there are plenty of other methods of virus transmission, though, just that broadband eliminates one).

I used to use a dedicated Olitec Fax modem system but, as I said, it was so much trouble keeping it set up to work, I gave it up.

andsome brings up a good point - do you have enough faxes to send to justify it? I do use Fax a lot for legal reasons where an email is not acceptable. To this end, I have bought a HP 7310 Scanner/Printer/Fax/Copier which I am very pleased with and, although the Fax part is connected to my analogue phone line, there is no connection of this to my computer which makes it safe from transmitting nasties.

I'm probably being cynical, but my suspicion is that you want to do it only because it is there, even though you may never use it, and it could cause problems. :D
