doug Posted February 8, 2008 Report Share Posted February 8, 2008 Was issued with my NHS stereo hearing aids this morning! God the noise! Went to have my ears sorted a couple of months ago big problem with wax in right - my good ear. Had been doing the olive oil treatment for some weeks then after the doc put me on to using dilute bicarbonate drops - washing soda to you lot - which seemed move some more, but she referred me to the ENT clinic at Durham. The chap there gave me a good sounding out then used a vacuum cleaner to suck the rest of the wax out. He then sent me to the Audiology clinic where they did various sound tests. When I went back to him he looked at the results and said he could see what the problem was - I had an age related issue and prescribed hearing aids.Well I was fitted this morning and isn't everything so damned noisy. The racket from this keyboard is appalling. Was outside in the garden earlier and the racket from the birds would keep anyone awake. Am struggling to turn the volume down but the audio clinic said the my brain would learn to adjust to the changed sounds. It's a good job I don't have andsome's problem with his sized brain! I walked out of the hearing centre and the noise of people walking and talking was awesome. For the first time in years - I heard the birds dawn chorus whilst the windows were still closed and could hear everything management said to me - not that I admitted to hearing all of it. The TV sound no longer needed to be turned up until it shook the walls and the (diesel) car was deafening.After a week or two things settled down and the noises were no longer intrusive.There were two situations where I mainly experienced difficulty which caused me to go for aids. First - being out with friends in a noisy restaurant etc was like being alone. They were all chatting happily but I could hardly hear a word. I could hear noise - but could not discriminate the words. The second problem was conversation in the car. My Audi is not particularly noisy - but it was difficult to hear a conversation - especially on rough roads or at high speeds.The aids have resolved the first problem - I can now participate in conversations in restaurants etc much more comfortably - but the car issue is not fully resolved. It is better - but not perfect.Two weeks ago I did two or three hours gardening, mowing lawns and clearing leaves. I suddenly became aware that the leaf blower was not as noisy as usual - when I found to my horror that one of my hearing aids had dropped out. At £2,600 for the pair this was an expensive loss. I honestly thought I had no chance of finding it - but to my surprise I found it within 5 minutes nestled in the grass. Whew......So good luck with your new ears doug - and don't let the family know just how good your hearing is now - it has its uses. It has helped me a lot.I had noticed through life that as a man grew older his ears seemed to get bigger. I often wondered why this should be and if it occurred in all men.From your doctors comments, that an age related ear issue occurs, it would appear to be something on a par with eye sight. In the eyesight business your sight gets worse so that you can not see the wrinkles of the opposite sex and so they always appear attractive. However the ear business looks as though the ears do actually grow larger to collect more sound so that you are able to tell what the opposite sex are saying...an equalising factor to correct the problems caused by them always mumbling. I agree that ladies' wrinkles and cellulite are masked by the gentlemen's failing eyesight though.
