I understand that a tiny incision is made into my eye, the damaged lens 'blasted' into bits, then sucked out and replaced with another one. I should have superb vision in that eye then (except for the reading, of course). One of my friends recently had laser treatment for cataracts - in both eyes. One settled down quite quickly but the other took about 4 months. He is delighted with the results. Hope all goes well for you.Thanks Alan, andsome.Alan, did your friend have a replacement lens? I don't know if that is normal, but I have a -5.25 prescription in my left eye and -4.75 in the right. The left eye will be NHS funded, but I expect I'll have to pay for the right one to have laser correction. It will be the first consulation on Tuesday, to discuss what is to happen. I am really nervous about it. Having worn specs since I was 9 years old, it'll seem like a miracle to have good sight for the first time in my life (except for the normal reading problem for all at our age). :D Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AlanHo Posted February 10, 2008 Author Report Share Posted February 10, 2008 Irene - just spoken to my friend and here is the story.He had cataracts in both eyes - one worse than the other - but not deemed bad enough to get free NHS treatment. He therefore went private. He had one eye done initially and the second one a couple of months later.The operation, exactly as you described, was totally painless and he could see clearly within a hour or two. He previously required spectacles for both distance and reading and he had suitable bifocals. After the operation the new lens they inserted corrected his sight such that he only needs spectacles for reading - but still wears new bifocals to avoid the fag of having to keep taking glasses on and off. His wife - also a cataract sufferer - was so impressed with her husband's experience she had her eyes done recently. In her case she still needs to wear glasses to correct astigmatism in one eye which the new lens insert is not able to do. So it looks as though you will be fine and there is nothing to worry about - but you will almost certainly need new specs if you currently need them for both distance and reading or have a vision defect the new lens cannot correct.Hope this helps - and best of luck.
