Upgraded 2GB to 5GB of RAM, and Vista gives lower rating

Hello!

I originally had 2GB of RAM A-DATA 800 (2 sticks, in dual channel).

It gave me a rating of (I think) 5.6

Then (yesterday) I upgraded to 4 sticks. 1 didn't work. 2x2GB stick, 1 worked one didn't (motherboard problem)

So I had 4GB of RAM.

(2GB 800 Transcend)

It gave me a rating of 5.3

Now (today) I have taken out one of the A-Data (1GB) and replaced it with a Transcend (2GB).

I now have 5GB of RAM.

I did the hardware assessment thing again, this time getting a rating of 5.0

Why, when I am upgrading my computer, does the rating go down?

Some help here please!

(Quick, if I need to return the RAM, it only has a 7-day return policy)

This is a known phenomenon and there there used to be an explanation about it on the Crucial website.

I can't remember what that explanation was but it gave clear proof that above a certain limit (4GB in the case of XP at that time) any additional memory would cause a drop in performance.

I am totally ignorant of al the RAMifications of Vista, but even I knew of this problem.

It was explained to me by a very knowledgeable friend.

It appears that the RAM fairy (and there is one in every computer) lives for most of her time in a little cave just outside the CPU. When the CPU needs some information it says to the RAM fairy, " Oh dearest RAM fairy wouldst thou go and fetch unto me the bit of information about *******". The RAM fairy says, "Certainly, Oh Greatest CPU." and off she pops.

Now as you may know, but on the other hand may not know, but a question put out on your myriad forum connections will soon confirm, all RAM fairies have, by necessity, very short legs. This means that the have the ability to get through small gaps, and round corners, very easily and quickly, but it does limit the amount of ground they can cover in a given time. That is to say they have a limited top speed.

Coupled to this is the fact that, due to the CPU's silly habit of sending the RAM fairy back with used information at the same time as asking for some more, the RAM fairy is not absolutely sure where she put the information last time it was out. Now in a larger RAM there is more space to cover and more space in which to loose stuff, which is why it takes time to find it and get it back to the CPU in any thing that is too big.

Simple as that, really.

I was going to mention the fact that since the RAM fairy had such short legs, she has the problem of having to get out the steps whenever she needs to look on any of the higher shelves, but I thought that may seem like a silly exaggeration..
