The pens and pencils Ghost.

I just needed to write something down in the study - and there was not a pencil or pen to be found. This is a regular problem - this house is haunted by a pen and pencil ghost who whips them away in the night and secretes them in the most unlikely of places.

So - once more I found myself checking all the rooms for the missing things. I found about 8 in a kitchen drawer - hiding with some utensils, several in a drawer in the hallway under one of the phones. 9 were asleep in the bottom of the magazine rack in the lounge - 4 on a table in the conservatory, 5 in the cutlery drawer in the dining room sideboard, at least a dozen in various places in the garage and no less than 9 in the car door pockets and glove box. A further 7 were lurking in various jackets and coats in the wardrobe/hall cloakroom but only 3 were found in the bedside cupboard.

They are all now back in a drawer in the study - but for how long....?... .

I am glad somebody else has noticed the odd behaviour of pens and pencils. We have nowhere near as many in circulation, but we do have a strange herding instinct with ours.

No matter where you put one down, next time you want it, it will have gone off to look for others. Some times a number will gather in a certain location and so you feel sure you know where to find one when next you need one. But No. When you want one they have all migrated to another location, or been spooked by the pencil boggart and fled in terror.

I sometimes wonder if there is any connection with the Phantom Tangler who lives in the string drawer and who, I am sure, makes regular visits to the paper clip box, the rubber band box and the drawer with all the various NiCad etc. battery chargers in it.

I once owned a corkscrew which suffered from rampant wanderlust. It was supposed to keep itself in a kitchen drawer with his best friend the bottle opener and their cousin the patent tin opener.

I can only gues that there were bad feelings between them and the others would shout "screw you" because whenever he was wanted on duty - he had gone AWOL. Many is the time I have had to resort to using my trusty Swiss Army Knife to get at the contents of a bottle of wine.

Things are OK now though - someone gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago a very fiendish cork removing device with a series of levers you have to manipulate firstly to remove the cork and secondly to eject it from the screw. The device is so bulky it cannot possibly escape from the drawer - and if it did - it could hardly hide anywhere else in the house.

My ex-partner had a thing about her keys. She was forever misplacing them. Her daughter bought an electronic device for her which you attach to the key ring - then if you can't find them you whistle - and they answer back. The idea is sound enough - but you try whistling when you can't find your keys and have a fit of the giggles in the process. It's impossible.

You need someone like me - I know where everything is - or according to hubby - I should. We have endless pointless rows about who had it last and where did they put it.

It's ALWAYS him who has mislaid the item - but will he admit that? no, he says I should know where it is.
