I've had popups on the AVG updates recommending AVG 8.0 but this is the paid for version - which is not apparent (to me, anyway) until you're almost at the point of downloading. Irene Posted April 24, 2008 Report Share Posted April 24, 2008 I had a pop-up which appeared yesterday, which said that I was eligible for the update to AVG Free 8.0.I subsequently downloaded and installed. It all went fine, but this morning it says that the email protection isn't active. It was OK yesterday, so I'm not sure what has changed. I'll take a look at it later. Dencandy Posted April 24, 2008 Report Share Posted April 24, 2008 This is definitely a new version of the Free edition (a new version of the Paid-for edition is also available).But it's not clear if it's intended to replace the old Anti-virus & Anti-Spyware versions. Presumably it does, otherwise there's likely to be conflicts and waste of resources. The same will be true if you have another Anti-Spyware product. I had a look at the AVG Forum & there's nothing about this matter there, also. So, as usual, I'll wait a while till some of theses questions are answered.AVG Free is an excellent unobtrusive & effective product, IMO, and I have it on the Desktop & the Laptop. AlanHo Posted April 24, 2008 Report Share Posted April 24, 2008 I have just run a full scan of my computer using AVG anti virus version 8.It found and automatically deleted 2 spyware files. They were 2 copies of my K Lite codec pack. One copy being stored on my data internal hard drive and the other on the backup hard drive. It made a jolly good job of deleting them - I can't find either to retrieve the file.It is interesting that although it is called AVG Anti Virus free edition version 8 it evidently also looks for spyware. Why it would regard the K Lite codec pack as spyware I have no idea.I must now see if I can tweak any available settings to ensure it asks permission before deleting files.I tried a manual update this evening (although it is set to check for updates at 8.00 am each day) but it would not connect to the server for about an hour. Dencandy Posted April 27, 2008 Report Share Posted April 27, 2008 I had version 7.5 tried AVG version 8 for a few hours before reverting back to another anti-virus plus AVG Anti-spyware as 2 separate apps. Here's why:1 - AVG Free 8 is more difficult to configure and adapt for those, like me, who need manual updates and scanning.2 - The procedure for initialising email scanning is obscure, to say the least. Although the main menu told me I didn't have email scanning configured, there seemed to be no way to actually configure it. (See also Irene's post above).3 - Having an anti-virus & anti-malware in one application means we are dependent on AVG being ahead of the field in both departments. What happens if, say, the anti-malware part remains amongst the best, but the anti-virus part falls behind? Then, to ensure we still get the best, we have to uninstall it and replace with another combined anti-spy/anti-virus or with 2 separate utilities.So I uninstalled it and replaced it with AntiVir and AVG Anti-Spyware as separate applications, both free editions. So far, so good.By the way, you can't get the old versions from AVG anymore (but you can get the updates), you have to go to 3rd party distributors, like FileHippo. Also, the last version of AVG Anti-Spyware has real-time monitoring, the previous version only had scanning.A raspberry for AVG with this one, in my opinion. P.S. There doesn't appear to be any problem at present. Vs 7.5 is no longer in evidence, so I can only assume that it was removed during the Vs 8 installation. I did try to, Dencandy, but couldn't seem to get it to work. However, I just had another look and it's now says it's active!! Maybe it just needs to find its' feet. AlanHo Posted April 29, 2008 Report Share Posted April 29, 2008 The only problem I have experienced with version 8 so far is that it has sometimes hung when connecting for its daily download. The download window appears but nothing happens and I had to use task manager to clear it.I decided to uninstall and re-install it - but was surprised to see in the control panel uninstall window that only version 7.5 showed - which I had earlier uninstalled before installing version 8.I repeated the process and the new instal of version 8 seems to be working OK - but will it tomorrow...?.
