Brown graduated from University after studying 'the history of the Labour party' he clearly has not learnt anything from his studies. We are now fast approaching a similar scenario as was experienced in the 1970s. In 1974 Labour inherited a balanced and benign economy. Over the next 5 years they managed to destroy tens of thousands of 'real' jobs, the economy was up to it's neck in debt, Chancellor Denis Healy was forced to beg and borrow billions from the IMF, almost the whole of the public sector was on strike, with tons of rotting and uncollected waste building up in the street, grieving families were unable to bury their dead and inflation was running amock. The voters, including life long Labour supporters, had had enough and voted Conservative on mass. Today we have a similar crisis. New Labour, inherited a balanced economy in 1997. For the first 5 years they stuck to the Tories spending plans, but then, true to form, their old habit of we know what's best arrogance and complete lack of financial understanding could not be supressed any longer. We now have inflation at double the 'official' rate, personal and national debt is the highest it has ever been, millions of 'bogus' Government jobs have been created, private pensions have been raided and the cash squandered, the highest individual tax rates ever recorded, and companies and other large employers are scrambling to leave the UK for tax friendly countries. We even have the US Government threatening legal action over increased stealth taxes on airlines, in breach of the open skies agreement. The only good that comes from all of this is that there is a real chance that Labour will be out of office for the next 20 years, whilst a whole generation of potential votors have been made aware of the risks of voting Labour. This bears an uncanny resemblance to what is happening now :0 It seems that Labour has given up it's 'new' tag and we are going back to the 'old' Labour policies of the 1970's ! p.s. that comment by pip seems to be 'spot on' Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(no they were not old sheep...it was he who he was elderly).We had gone on "the Bike" for a tootle out and found ourselves in Hawes and there was a sheep fair on. We went over to observe and as we stood looking round this old chap looked over and "nodded" in the way that says "How do!"So I nodded back and took a few step towards him, "Is it a good trade then today", I asked. "Noh, it's nubbut very steady"."Why's that then?". I asked him."It yon bloody Labour lot. I mak nothin on 'em. They believe 'at iverybody shud ha' nowt and we shud all share at it!"This was quite a long time ago (pre Maggie) but it keeps coming back to me, and it still has the same ring of truth to it. Just look what M.P.s are asking forYes I expect that they will make sure that they have a nice inflation busting deal and expect the low paid to accept a low pay 'rise' of around 2% which doesn't even keep up with inflation as everyone knows that the real inflation rate is way higher than the 3.3% the government is quoting.I wonder just how much increase there will be on retirement pensions this year.
