This morning I wanted to restore to yesterday after I removed PrevX from my system (it had date expired) and the uninstall was a bit of a mess.I found that all of my Restore points had been deleted and I was unable to do anything about it. I wasn't too worried as I then re-installed my system from my Acronis backup although I would have preferred it a bit more convenient from SR. It wasn't the PrevX removal fiasco that had caused the failure as my Acronis backup didn't have SR working either.On trying to find why SR had failed on me I found that something (???) had activated it on all the drives in the computer. I have written previously about SR failing of multi-hard drive system and to only have the "C" drive restorable.So, two points:1. A repeat of a previous comment that (in XP at least) System Restore only works properly on the "C" drive in multi-drive computers.2. Check periodically to see that system Restore hasn't been surreptitiously activated on multiple drives.I just checked mine and it was set up for Drive C, D & J (my external hard drive).So, I have now disabled the SR on drive J. -pops-, if I understand correctly, you recommend that I would also disable SR on the D drive, where my data files are stored? -pops- Posted July 4, 2008 Author Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 Again, yes.I was out this morning and have not been able to respond before now.You only really need your "C" drive on System Restore, it doesn't have any effect on data so activating it just for data storage drives doesn't do anything useful - and might very well stop SR being useful at all!Please do have at least one backup of your data/pictures etc.The thing that disturbed me was what had switched the SR on the other drives (without my permission)? Until I un-installed PrevX there haven't been any changes to the and it wasn't that as my Acronis backup was also lacking the System restore points - and PrevX was fully installed then.If you want something to back up your data, Irene, have a look at 2nd Copy. I find it extremely useful. Scarecrow Man Posted July 4, 2008 Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 If you are just backing up a folder, and not your entire system, a simple xcopy batch file set up as a scheduled task will work just as well.In fact, a new tool called robocopy, included in Vista be default, but available for xp, can do the job just as well.
