homecomputeraid
Several of the people who were involved in engineering Google thought they could do better and started their own Search Engine called Cuil (pronounced cool).I find that the graphics that come up with the search results are often not relevant, but other than that it seems pretty cool (sorry to over-use the pun).I've changed my home page from Google to Cuil to see how it works for me.http://www.cuil.com/
-pops-
I tried it this morning. Total rubbish. Launched far too early, before it functions even reasonably well.I put in a two word search string - admittedly a bit obscure but Google comes up with several pages of hits. This thing decides that the first word of the string is irrelevant and comes up with six hits totally unrelated to what I want. That wasn't the only thing it failed on. I made several more attempts to use it and each time it was far inferior to Google.Poor performance like it is showing will persist with it for a long time and, even if it becomes good in the future, a poor reputation is very difficult to shake off.For interest, I use Google scholar for a lot (or all) of my specialised searching. This eliminates most of the irrelevant and cranky web sites.
homecomputeraid
I find that if I provide a bit more information than I would in a Google search, it comes up with very relevant sites. It does seem to produce a variety of results with very general searches though. I like their privacy policy much more than Google's.
Scarecrow Man
Search for "Windowsforum" and a result from Jan 18 2003 appears. Search for "Windowsforum" on google, and the main page is #1, forums #2.I agree that the privacy policy is a bit more desirable (who ever reads that anyways... you should!)Cuil also needs time to build a user base. No longer do people say "Search it", they say "Google it". I don't think it's going to be taking over any time soon. An alternative, sure, but it will not 'replace' google. Not to mention, Google offers a tonne of services other than search. Google is not going away.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
A few commends on the Internet (found via Google)http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/a...e_should_t.htmlhttp://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2326742,00.asphttp://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/27/googl...he-whole-story/http://news.cnet.com/cuil-shows-us-how-not...-search-engine/http://www.informationweek.com/news/intern...cleID=209602251Anyway, remember how many search engines there were around before Google came around? Maybe these companies still exist (somewhere), but all anybody every uses is Google.

Hb_Kai
I don't think Google can be replaced so easily now. It's become on the most known search engines and probably websites on the internet today. And i never like using anything but google because i know how to use google and know what to expect. lol.And google has a "google tips" page somewhere..... If you google it i'm sure you'll find it. ;) But it's quite handy. lol.And since i'm using the library PC's, they block websites obviously with "bad" words and whatever. lol. But they blocked the page when i tried searching "cuil search tips"!Reason: DDR score = 182. This page will not be displayed because it contains prohibited words or it has exceeded its tolerance of questionable words.
andsome
After looking at it I'll stick with Google UK. :D
homecomputeraid
I've been trying it for a few days now. It often comes up with no hits for searches that result in many hits on other search engines. The following search:verify dns registration domain controllers using nslookup commandresults in no hits on Cuil while Google and Ask both come up with many hits including the Microsoft Technet page I'm looking for. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Doomed from the start! When Google started, I tried it, and immediately left all other search engines (Altavista, Ask Jeeves, Excite, etc) behind, never to touch them again. Now something new is announced with great fanfare, I tried it and - well - leave this one behind as well.If someone wants to take on Google, they really have to do a little more than that. We do not even know their faces - when Google started, everybody knew the faces of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and fans from all over the world went to interview them! Here today (a tiny little bit), gone tomorrow. -pops-
Much like forums - thousands are created but, of those, very few are there after a month and fewer still after a year.
Scarecrow Man
Google it.You've said it.. I've said it.. it means search, but why would you use anything but google?I do like the interface of Cuil though. Very modern. Cuil has a long way to go to match google though. Simply creating a search engine is not enough. Google has a plethora of services that no one can match.
-pops-
it means searchApparently it doesn't. See the PCA site http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=13899

See the PCA site http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=13899I mean instead of "searching" you "google" for what you're looking for. However, this is an interesting read... Especially the last part.Maybe Cuil's founders tried to find an Irish dictionary using their site and couldn't. Searching on Cuil.com for 'Irish English dictionary' fails to turn up a link to such a dictionary in at least the first six pages of results...
Scarthy © ® ™
Firefox Users - To get the cuil search (in the list of others - top right) = Do a search on the site and then look in the drop down within the FF search and you can then 'add' Cuil to the list of other engines!I think it's OK (seems to be anyway?) - Been with it for a few days now ;)
