doug
A blob of Quink ink onto blotting paper, let it dry then dip one end into water. Watch the water diffuse up the blotting paper and see all the colours spreading up. And you always thought that blue ink was just blue - and that was chromatography. Aah why did I have to spoil the illusion.

Guest northamuk
Doug, since you are the whiz kid in chemistry, what was that purple cristalline stuff which when mixed with another liquid would explode when it dried and was then touched? doug
potassium permanganate and sugar but there were other more exciting ways of producing interesting effects. B)

Guest northamuk
Nope, I used Potassium Permanganate. Used to get it from the Chemist's.
doug
But the other stuff was much more fun, sprinkle it on the corridor floor at school. Better than setting ogg jumping crackers.
Guest northamuk
Doug, that's exactly what I used it for but it had to dry out before it would explode.Think it was ammonia it had to be mixed with.

andsome
This just has to be one of the best threads ever. Almost all of the contributions bring back memories. Did anyone else try making giant sized cigarettes out of rolled up newspaper and dry grass, or smoke dried used tea leaves in a clay pipe? I remember Nell that the furry nickers were usually navy blue or dark brown, and the biggest thrill of all was to actually see a pair while they were being worn. Did anyone else make a crystal set and actually pick up a radio station on it? If only I had saved all those early editions of Eagle comic, they are now worth a fortune. AlanHo
andsome on wacky backy from childhood !! - that explains a lot.I'm not sure I did the right thing starting this thread - you lot are going to finish up all melancholy.Yes andsome - I too built a crystal set but cannot remember hearing more than whistles and crackles. I therefore moved on to a small treadle operated fretsaw and made 'things' before moving on again to model railways, kites and model aeroplanes.Like you andsome, I am blessed with filmstar looks - always have been, and life has been one long battle to keep the girls off me. When I was a kid I always carried a matchbox containing spiders and worms - it generally worked.I recall being chased by a girl whose parents ran the local corner shop who used to lie in wait for me to walk her to school. She was forever giving me sticky boiled sweets - a rare treat in those days of rationing. It was some time before I got to wonder where she kept them - she had no pockets in her gym slip and never carried a handbag. It transpired that she normally kept them in the pocket of her blue furry knickers - but a second pair had no pocket - so she tucked them up her knicker leg. Nearly , but not quite, put me off free sweets.Back again to the days of rationing - does anyone recall when meat and bacon was rationed that you could buy something called 'Danish Fry' which came in slices like bacon and you fried it. I recall my Dad loving it but it was far too salty for me and much preferred the occasional sausage when available. I still love sausages - you should see my collection, I've got 'undreds. How about collecting cigarette cards - I used to have quite a collection but disposed of them years ago. I bet they would be worth a few bob now.
andsome
I well remember the bacon ration dropping to two ounces per week for a time. Eggs were on what was called an allocation number. Sometimes we could get as many as two each in a week, sometimes there were none for two or three weeks. Do you remember dried egg? We used to love it, you made a batter out of it and fried omelets with it, or it was even nicer when you dipped a piece of bread in it ands fried that. The secret with the crystal sets was to run a length of wire two or three time round the room on the picture rail to act as an areal, and then spend ages waddling the cats whisker round in different positions on the crystal. As well as hundreds of loose cigarette cards, I had several complete sets in their own albums, they would probably be practically priceless now. AlanHo
An old school mate of mine - we still see each other regularly - has kept in his loft everything he ever collected from all his hobbies - right from when he and I were 10 year old sprogs. He's got model trains, trams, automobiles. Some Keil kraft and other brands of model aeroplane kits, still boxed and waiting to be built. Bus tickets, train spotting logbooks, skiffle group instruments, magazines galore, cigarette cards, old postcards, theatre programmes, air guns, photo developing and printing equipment, fishing tackle, a butterfly collection and heavens knows what else. His missus lives in fear of the bedroom ceilings collapsing under the weight.I got rid of all my 'junk' and now wish I hadn't.

AlanHo
I have no idea how you spell it so I will resort to phonetics - does anyone remember Kayli powder which you sucked through a liquorice straw and then tried not to cough when it hit the back of your throat. Some time ago we saw on sale at a food and health exhibition at the NEC a stand selling liquorice root and jars of cod liver oil and malt - evoking fond memories of our childhood. I used to suck every last morsel of the cod liver oil (sometimes called Virol I think?) off the spoon. For old times sake we bought some of each. We tried the liquorice root in the car on the way home - which was awful - so that got chucked away. Never mind - the cod liver oil and malt was always a kids favourite during 'the war' so we had that to look forward to when we got home. IT WAS HORRID.
