Software for Writing Piano Sheet Music?

Does anyone know of a piece of software I could use for 'typing' up Piano Sheet music?

Just a simple one would suffice.

Cross-Platform (or WINE compatible) please!

Does anyone know of a piece of software I could use for 'typing' up Piano Sheet music?

"Typing" from what source? MIDI files? Recorded music? Keyboard input?

I use Cubase from http://www.steinberg.net/; I know it can print music sheets, although I have never used it. I am sure there is standalone software that can do this as well, but ... see above questions.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

I want to write sheet music directly on the computer, using the computer keyboard &/or the computer mouse.

This includes Quavers, SemiQuavers, Crotchet, Minim's and Semibreve. Also the Dotted Note.

Please recommend to me a simple program that will allow me to type this.

PS: I'd also find it useful if the program could then play back the sheet music on a 'virtual' piano (visually).

Downloaded the software (Slow servers BTW), and am using it.

However, I can't seem to work out how to make it give me a playback with the changing pic of a piano.

Please tell me if it is possible with this software.

To do what you want Panarchy, there is only one software that I know of and it costs about £400., unless you are a professional musician it is not worth it.

This may inspire me to become a professional musician.

I'm trying to learn a Tom Lehrer song (it was his birthday yesterday) off by heart, on the Piano.

So I'm typing up the sheet music in a program, hoping that the program will have the ability to 'play onto on-screen piano'.

So please Alan, inform me of the software name you were mentioning before.

I am sure that there are more softwares that can do what you want, but it may not be a single software doing all that, but a combination of several. Maybe one doing the writing of the music sheet (and recording it as a MIDI file), another one playing it from the MIDI file, showing you the piano keys. The more specific you are when searching Google, the more likely you will find what you are looking for.

Well in that case, can someone please recommend me software which allows you to;

• Type up (or drag and drop/click) Sheet-Music (for Piano)
  
• Playback the typed up Sheet-Music with a virtual On-Screen Piano
  

Please recommend me a piece of software which can either do both, or just the first, then export to something that can be played back on the On-Screen Keyboard.

Thanks for your reply.

I've thoroughly gone through the checklist, and I can't see anything for On-Screen Piano playback.

It seems that all (well almost all) can export to MIDI supported format, I would then need to parse that though an On-Screen Piano application, which is what I am looking for.

I have NOT typed/clicked up the Sheet Music yet, so if there was a combined program, which included both the feature that allows for typing up Sheet-Music, and also the feature which 'plays' back (Virtually) to an On-Screen Piano. I do not need audio support, merely visual.

Please recommend me a program that can both of the above things, (create sheet-music & playback to on-screen Piano), or a program which allows for creation of Sheet-Music, then exportation into a format compatible to be parsed through the On-Screen Piano program, in which case I would need the name for BOTH programs.

Take MagicScore Maestro, it has a virtual piano keyboard, you can press keys with your mouse, and the notation will be entered automatically. Otherwise connect it (if its a midi piano) to your computer, play and record in real time. It's easy to understand and work with this program. I use it quite successfully.
