catgate
I just had a communication from one of my daughters in France (Sete). What do you make of this?:- Back in the land of internet. We've been off line since Wednesday. We first thought it was just us and our crap wiring in the old part of town as it's always on and off. But after 3 days I rang SFR, the latest set of twits we've been sold to for our connection, only to be asked if we had Windows XP. It would seem that if you have anything prior you could not access the internet until they'd messed about with the spaghetti. This sounds most peculiar to me. -pops-
Known in France as pulling la laine over les yeux (confusing the unwary).Like the man fixing my central heating system "Oh, it needs a printed circuit board. Very difficult to get these old parts - it will take about three weeks to get a new one.""Forget that" I said, knowing that there was no printed circuit board in the device "Goodbye". The only reason I got the guy in was because I considered I was getting too decrepit to continue doing this practical work myself. I bought a new thermostat over the Internet - here the next day - and persuaded elder granddaughter to fix it in place for me (under my guidance). This she did. Whole job done in ten minutes. Cost? £12 for the thermostat and an Easter Egg.
Belatucadrus
The only valid reason for pre XP OS problems would be if the modem/router supplied didn't have drivers for older versions. The help room staff were parler cordonniers. Typical response from the ignorant jobsworth following an on screen crib sheet.

I very much doubt that her internet connection had morphed whilst she had been without service. -pops-The only reason I got the guy in was because I considered I was getting too decrepit to continue doing this practical work myself.Yes, this dicrepitude thing is nothing special, is it.I have just had a battle with our heating system. It turned out to be a right swine to sort out because the fault eventually turned out to be a sticking motorised valve. However just to make things very difficult it was not sure if it wanted to stck in the open position or the closed position...so it did it in either position depending on its mood. This made diagnosis less than satisfactory and I fitted a new programmer and a new pump before it was clear what the problem was. The valve is situated alongside another one or in the loft where the headroom is about 3 feet. Climbing the loft ladder and working on my knees with my feet tucked under me have done my leg ulcers no good whatsoever. I'm back on light duties. andsome
It sounds as though a thermostat and an easter egg were fitted to the boiler.
