Remote diagnosis of hardware problems is notoriously difficult to do well, here however are the three most obvious things :-

1) Overheating, check the cooler fan on the CPU is working, if necessary replace it.

2) Power Supply Unit aka PSU on its way out. Unfortunately difficult to test the theory without replacing it.

3) Hard drive problems, usually accompanied by unfortunate grinding noises. Ensure you've backed up all important data as you may be left hanging if it caves completely.

thanks for that the fan is working ok and there has not been any funny noises from the hard drive so maybe i will change the power supply to see if that works i have an old one from a computer i used to have do you think that would be ok

Check that all vents and grills are clear of dust and fluff so that there is a good airflow through the machine.

Also check that there aren't deposits of dust on the fins of the CPU heatsink (or anywhere else).

I've just fixed a machine which similar self-switching off problems it was due entirely to sticky deposits of grime on the heatsink and pet hair impeding the airflow.
