Guest spikeychris
OK. Your question quote >> A question I posed earlier: If "User Shell folder\personal reads"%SstemDrive"\My Documents" and My Documents are really at "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents", shouldn't I change this registry entry to the correct path?? Personally I would say no as I can't see how it would fix it.God only knows how this has happened and we have tried all that I know. Try the repair option, it will not change any of your personal data but you will have to reapply any updates you have installed. What time is it there?Chris
kenk
Chris,Its "High Noon" right now. I guess you are 5 hours ahead of me. How did the game go?I'm going to save the registry again and then try changing that key to the actual path. At this point, what can it hurt? As you pointed out you have tried everything else and I really do appreciate your patience. After I try that change, I will reboot and see if the installer works and also see what, if anything in the two keys we have been working on changed. If the installer does not work I will follow your suggestion and boot from the CD and try the repair. If that fixes it and the install works I will go back into Microsoft and install all of the upgrades they offer, checking after each one to see if the install still works. What do you think?Ken

mark2
Kenk, the windows titles under your avatar relate to the no. of posts you have made, starting with 3.1 and going all the way to XP, some of the more 'verbal' members reached XP in days. The 'warning' is there to tell you when you've been a bad boy, we send Nellie round when you reach 100% :D :D This explains more
Guest spikeychris
Yeah so behave yourself cus Nel would love a trip across the pond. One final thing before I have dinner and sit down with Jack Daniels, there is another way (2K's good like that) if you have backed up the reg lately then you can use the system root backup folder. Even if you haven't you could take it back as it where..1. Start the computer by using the Windows 2000 CD-ROM 2. When you see the "Welcome to Setup" message, press "R" (without thequotation marks) for "repair." (next bit is different) 3. Press "C" (without the quotation marks) to run the Recovery Console tool4. Select the installation that you want to repair.5. Type the administrator password. 6. After you log on to the Recovery Console tool, type the followingcommands: - "cd system32\config" (without the quotation marks) - "ren software software.old" (without the quotation marks)7. After you type the commands, copy the backup of the System hive fromeither the %SystemRoot%\Repair folder or the reason why I asked if you had created a repair disk is you could use it here, the %SystemRoot%\Repair\Regback folderif you run the Emergency Repair Disk Wizard from Windows 2000 Backup and Recovery tools.IMPORTANT: You need to restore the most recent copy of the System hive. Anyprograms that you installed after the date of the reg will have to be reinstalled as officially they don't exist (that make sense?)To copy the default System hive, type:"copy c:\winnt\repair\system" (without the quotation marks)To copy the System hive that was backed up the last time that you ran theEmergency Repair Disk Wizard, type:"copy c:\winnt\repair\regback\system" (without the quotation marks)After you do this, type exit at the command prompt. NOTE: It may be possible to resolve this issue using the Fast Repairprocess. When running a Fast Repair, however, you may receive the following error ifyoudo not have an Emergency Repair Disk and instead select "L" to search for anexisting Windows 2000 installation: Setup cannot find a Windows 2000 installation to repair. Unless youprovide the Emergency Repair disk for the installation you want to repair, Setup cannot make the repairs. If you receive this error but do not have an ERD, use the process outlinedaboveto restore the software hive using the Recovery Console. If an ERD isavailable, you must run the Fast Repair twice for the registry to be restored. Thefirsttime a Fast Repair is done, a file system scan is completed. It is onlyduringthe second time that the registry can be repaired.Jacks calling, good luck.....Chris

kenk
VICTORY IS AT HAND!!! SUPERIOR INTELLECT, STUBBORN PERSEVERANCE AND THE LUCK OF A BLIND PIG ROOTING FOR ACORNS HAS ONCE AGAIN PROVEN TO BE TOO MUCH FOR THE WINDOWS O/S!!!I'd like to take a lot of credit for solving this problem, but those of you who have followed this thread know full well that I was clueless!!What finally solved the problem of Windows Installer not operating was my changing the values for the following:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\then in both "Shell Folders\Personnel" and also "User Shell Folders\Personal" I changed the value to the actual path to "My Documents" which was"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents"where I was logged on as the Administrator.I really appreciate the help of everyone that posted in an attempt to help me. Especially "spikeychris". I owe you one, although with my knowledge of the intricacies of Windows it may be a "one" that never gets paid. If you are ever in the US let me know and I'll help you learn to drink beer the proper way.....cold!I'll still check in from time to time. Thanks again.Ken
Agent Smith
Much as I hate to butt in on spikeychris's excellent registry tutorial, may I suggest a possible "quick solve" alternative.I would try to create an additional "administrator" account. Go to control panel>Users and Passwords, and click on the add button. Follow the bouncy ball, and create a new user and password, making sure on the third screen you select the other option and set the user as an "administrator". Log off the current user, and log back on as the new user, this will create all the relevant directories. Then try to run the setup program again. I am pretty sure it will run ok. If it does, you will then have an alternate set of registry entries for you to compare to your "broken" ones. If it dosn't then it would point to the broken registry entries being in the "default user" parts. Also, I assume that you have actually put the "my documents" directory back where it should be, otherwise the reg entries will be pointing to a non existant directory.Whatever happens, keep the reg hacks coming spikeychris, and even if the above works, we will need to fix the original registry problems.Regards. Agent Smith
This excellent thread was starting to go very off topic, so I have split it. The discussion about our american friends sport can now be found here In Off The TopicIf you wish to post any more info regarding this problem, please do so here, but for comments about American Football, please use the new thread.Thank You.
